Default Odometer KM or M?

After a search around on the forum I've noticed a couple of people mentioning that their Odometers are reading in Miles when they were told the car had done X KM's..

The Impreza I am looking to buy is an Import model, it has a MPH readout on the clocks but the dealer assures me the ODO is in KM's (120K KM or 75K M).. It does say KM under the odo but if an inline "converter" has been fitted wouldn't that mean that it would now be displaying MPH on the speed and Miles on the ODO?? Unless it is merely a new face to the clocks with the correct spacing for MPH??

Is there any sure-fire way of telling without measuring a perfect mile and driving it?

Cheers!

Motorways have mile posts, so no need to measure. Or GPS?

Not sure the seller is going to let me take it for a blat down the motor way.. but GPS.. now there's a good point! I'll take my GPS receiver with me and check the distance travelled on TomTom..

Cheers!
