Default revs dropping down

I could do with a little help! after driving the car for a while (15/20min) pull up to lights or park up the revs drop right down to about 500 rpm then flick back up to 1000. this carrys on for about 1min then stops and the car chills out and idles about 700rpm where it stays. Is the maf fooked or is this normal.
Sorry if this makes me sound dumb

It's not normal, but it is common. What year is the car? Years 99-00 have delicate MAFs that present this behaviour when they are failing. The O2 (lambda) sensor causes it as well. On a 99-00 car, either of them are an 80 quid fix.

One of those two is the favourite. If it is the MAF, don't get suckered into buying the housing - that's an expensive part. Just the sensor is all you need.
