Default Pakistan/Kashmir Earthquake

I had a lot of difficulty identifying where to make a donation. The girls at Barclays did not know anything and at the local HSBC, the reaction was "Well we could put it in our No. 3 Charity Account" Not exactly cofidence enspiring.
I have now found the relevant information and to assist others who may have been hunting for it too:
www.dec.org.uk or telephone : 0870 6060900.

Shame we don't go on holiday there, or know people who have. That way it'd get loads of coverage

ITN covered it earlier this week with a different report each evening. At the time of the quake it was obvious the problems that would be faced by these people during the winter.
Because the area is so high and remote, logistics are a mega problem. The people are capable of helping themselves if they are given the basic equipment to build shelters but they also need food and medical aid.
A small detachment of the British Army has been assisting under a NATO command but it is too little and very late.
The appeal is for money that can be applied to the logistics and the items considered a priority. In addition I wanted to donate blankets, boots, thermal clothing, other clothing and a sleeping bag but there does not seem to be a facility for this and I would guess it would take too long to organise physical collections, sorting, packing and shipping to reach those in most need this winter. If anybody knows different please let me know.

I oroginally come from kashmir, it's a beautiful place used to be full of tourists etc until that stupid war of india/pakistan. Anyway i didnt find any facility to accept blankets and that but you can try giving these guys a call/ e-mail http://www.kirf.org/. They might be able to help you donate all that stuff. It's shame really it's completely dissapeared off the press yet it's still a problem but i guess people are more interested in big brother or something

Thankyou Ali for the very good link. Obviously money is most useful to them as they can spend it on what they know is most effective with their local knowledge.
Having made financial donations I will now investigate if they can take donations of clothing, boots etc. It is not rubbish but good gear for winter conditions but there may not be enough to warrant the effort.
I will post later.

Read this. www.kirf.org Pretty sad. I hope plenty people are motivated to make a donation or sponsor a child.
I have e-mailed them regards the possibility of other assistance and await a response but they clearly have their hands full.

Good thread was also trying to find how to do this.
I've now given some more cash.

watching it on ITV last week really brought it home how bad it is over there, those poor kids barely surviving the winter - a real shame that so much still needs to be done.

Had a long discussion with the guy who runs www.kirf.org this morning.
Basically the cost of getting clothes, bedding and food from the UK to Kashmir/Northern Pakistan is more than the cost of buying the materials needed in the area or sub region.
Most of the items required with the exception of medicins, are available from the sub region where transport costs are much less.
A lot of the people do not want to leave their own village to live in "tent cities" where they would be totally dependant on handouts, where sanitation is lacking and where disease is rife.
With timber and corugated iron sheets they can build their own shelters which are far superior to tents that cannot withstand heavy snow which is a feature of their weather up to March/April.
The timber and sheets can also be reused to form a more permanent abode when the winter is over.
The material cost of a house to take a family of 7-10 people is £500 to £600 and the people are capable of building it themselves.

If you have not already made a donation, please consider doing so.

£10 per month by standing order for a year sponsors a child.
Not a lot in terms of human suffering.
