For that sort of price you should be able to pick up a mint my99 uk turbo with mid / low miles.
Keep an eye in the for sale section on here.
Also worth a look is pistonheads.

Would agree you're best off looking at UK cars - on your budget you should get a nice late model facelift classic ( MY97 onwards ) with fsh, low miles etc...
I reckon in most cases these are a safer bet than an import with no known history as the UK cars often only have a couple of owners who have looked after them, and you get a pile of receipts, all the old MOT's, service history etc... with them.

Buy as standard as possible - even if you intend on modifying it yourself.
i bought a MY99 Classic with 59k on the clock for £6800 and it is mint, the thing is there is a lot of crap out there, you just need to be patient and wait for teh right one.
Oh BTW mine was from a dealer so i got a warrenty as well

7k would get you a good one with >50k in my view.
Of course, that said, some people do underprice their car and the market isn't that great for selling scoobies at the moment.

I am not saying that I wouldnt have liked to had sold the car for 8 or 9k, but I really cannot see a car of that age, spec going for any more. I dont dissagree that yours would be worth more because of the mileage, I was just aiming at a good condition with average miles.
Also, these cars will be coming up to 7 years old now, just look at the prices for 01, 02, and 03 wrx and sti's.
To me it seems that the cars took a big hit in depreciation over the last 18 months.

I would suggest £7K should get you a low mileage MY99 or even MY00 full UK spec Euro import. The Euro imports fetch a little less yet are just as good.
Go for as original condition as possible.
Scooby prices are starting to hold a little better at long last, a mate in the trade was telling me his little book had prices actually going up at one point last year (I guess that means they got the price wrong to begin with).

I would say that a near 7 year old car with 50-60k was low mileage, but its obviously not as low as the few cars out there with less than 30k, which can justifiably ask for a premium. Will you get a 50-60k car for 7k, yes, with a bit of haggling, will you get a <30k car for 7k. Nope, not unless the owner is a) desperate b) a mug

How about a UK Catalunya limited edition No. 021, R Reg for £6000.00, full service History?, APi warranty on the engine and driveline. Sitting at APi ready to go.
See http://www.apiengines.com/car_sales_detail.php?id=26
Photos available if you need.
At that price you'll have change to do some things to it yourself to personalise it.

I do agree though, there is only so far that this car will depreciate, hopefully this will stop now and they will start to hold for a while.

They can only do that, however, as there is still quite a good selection of nice classics on the road. In a couple of years though, I think they'll be a rare and highly sought after commodity. Sure, there'll be newer and cheaper cars, but then people will start to look at them and say: "I could have one the of last remaining mint classics". How much would a clean Escort Cosworth set you back now?

Rest assured the car is unmarked and VERY good throughout. Ken, a guy on here traded it in for an STi RA I had.
Do you have an office email rather than/ as well as -y the one ou left me?
Good Luck David APi
PS bigDaz2 on the Wales site here, has seen it and had a road test before he bought a type R off me. He'll give you a second opinion of the condition etc of the car.

I bought a 2000 Classic Wagon with 39.6k for £6,995. 2 owners full service history including all old invoices for servicing etc, Cat 1 toad alarm, mica blue. This was at the beginning of December - I've just had a cambelt and 52.5k service done (£340) and the car has now just crept over 42k but I tink I got a bargain!
The rear doors still had the child locks on them!

But if you listen to some posters on this site, late classic UK Turbos are only worth a few grand, and you can pick up early mint WRX imports for £3K
I think realistically you'll be hard pushed to find a good condition UK Turbo for under £5000, especially a facelift one - real price seems to be £6K and up for MY97 onwards that dont have mileages over 100K or have been thrashed.
Personally I dont think prices are going to drop that much lower on them as owners just wont be interested in selling, and buyers that know what they are looking for ( rather than just trying to get the cheapest car possible ) will always pay a premium for a car with a known history that has obviously been looked after.
When I was looking to buy earlier this year I looked at loads of cars under £5K - all the UK ones were very high mileage or had bodged DIY mods on them, or were just really scruffy. Most of the cheaper imports were complete sheds and I wouldnt have touched them with a bargepole. ( One dealer told me that all Japanese imports are excellent condition and properly serviced because the Japanese look after their cars ! ).
Looks as though the facelift classic has already started to become a classic !
