Hi guys, having a dilemma, got a 2000 turbo wagon at the weekend, knocked him down a lot on price as needs clutch - slips in 3rd sometimes and 3rd is notchy all the time, heard a common problem is once the clutch is gone, the syncros can be damaged and also 3rd gear break needed a rebuild/replacement box, and possibly flywheel?

So considering the worst which could cost £££ (though thanks to people who have suggested the likes of Lorvern Performance and Special Scoobies near me) the car is debaged from Subaru, has the 6 disc multiplay, optional leather, no roof bars as option from dealer, is P reg, has done 127k miles with full history, and I didn't pay much for it, so would it be worth spending the money?! (If the worst happened, going to change gearbox oil first, and get expert garage to have a feel, but clutch defo on way out)

lol point taken gutmann, though I wouldn't have paid £10k for a standard P plate wagon!

Ok £2k - believe me the guy only knew the front of the car cos of the steering wheel - he'd been driving it to work everyday for nearly 4 months and didn't even realise the clutch was slipping - bad thing was before he put it up for sale a local garage 'checked it over' for him and didn't even mention the clutch (though honestly if they had driven it (which I'd assume they did) it was obvious. When he went back and complained that they didn't pick it up (asking 'who' was this person who told him the clutch had gone - jeez doesn't take a fully qualified engineer to detec) they offered him to do one for £600 as if it was a favour!

Thanks for your advice, hopefully be a regular on this site now (this is first jap car, we're a family of dedicated Ford fans!) let you know what the two scooby specialist say when take it over, sure people dealing with them everyday would have a 'feel' for anything worse than dodgy clutch

Bear in mind that a clutch and gearbox will cost in the region of 1200 to replace, add that to your purchase price and it seems like a fair price.

Get the specialists to check it for you, then all should be good

Thanks for your reply - true, actually did get £1,200 off original asking price (he is leaving the country otherwise sure wouldn't have let go quite as cheap even given the problems) and from looking on Autotrader £3,300 for one this spec/age/mileage seems a good price!

Anyone confirm that 75/90w semi synthetic gearbox oil is ok/recommended (hopefully it will say in the handbook, but don't have that here with me at work)

Ive just bought a 1999 wagon as the cossie is tucked up for winter and luckily for me the previous owner had just put a brand new gearbox and clutch in it, something to do with 5th gear going, there is a bill in the service history for £1000 but as your a ford fan too you should be used to bills like that.

lol our 4x4 sapphire doesn't is tucked in the garage for winter too! *touches wood* the bills for that over the last 3 years have been small!

Lucky you! Hmm so gears failing on Scoobies seem to be common (after searching the forum)!

Well bit the bullet, J changed the gearbox oil this morning, has helped the crunching into changing down into third gear, clutch ordered and will be dropped off at the weekend for fitting
