Default Impreza P1

Hello, Im seriously looking at changing my civic type-r to one of these now.

they are about 280 bhp standard right?

are they easily modified? or are they already modified quite a bit from standard?

What sort of power would I get from chipping one.

Seriously think twice about chipping these cars they are already fairly highly strung at just under 280bhp.

Lots have gone bang around the 60k mark.

You're thinking of trading in your CTR for a P1, good choice

What kind of mods have you done to the Honda?

Sti type r version 5. There I said it before anyone else did. Buy one of these. Cheaper and supposedly better than a P1. I have had a P1 for the last 3 years btw.

P1, typeR version 5 / 6 are practically the same, you pay more for the P1 cos its a uk car thats all.

None of the above mentioned are unreliable as long as you look after them, dont rag the nuts off them, and dont skimp on servicing and MAF sensors.

You can mod them of course and safely, your wallet is the limit.

BTW, scoob tuning is not about 'chipping' 1999 onwards its all a bit more involved than that.

decat, remap, etc may see you to about 310bhp reliably for about a grand.

My Mrs has a 52 CTR that i drive regularly. fun car but not a patch on a P1 im afraid.

my civic just has a quikshift induction kit and a scorpion back box.

It really does sound awesome and revs to high heaven, but I want some turbo power

I was just wondering about the power, as I was looking at getting an evo but the servicing costs etc have put me off.

I would have about 12-14k to spend on a car, any recommendations?

Another reason for me buying the P1 would be because I dont think it will depreciate alot more than it has already, whereas I see some of the newer models selling for very cheap.

To be honest I would probably keep a P1 standard anyway, as the parkers quoted 4.6 to 60 MPH is plenty fast enough, a whole 2 seconds faster than the civic. I would probably just get a full scoobysport exhaust (as my dad used to have a classic scoob and it had one of these and it sounded amazing), an airfilter and maybe a dump valve, but think id get pissed off with the pshhh after a while.

Also, are the brakes different on the P1 to the normal classic? as my dads scooby brakes were quite simply shocking.

i,ve had a p1 for 2years never looked back i would say get one with better brakes ie ap or prodrive as the standard setup woz crap and the 18inch wheels are also a bonus but most ov all is full service history very important it puts a smile on my face every drive

Well said mate. I Agree, my bro had a sti v4 now he has a evo6. but P1 is the way forward!!

I moved up from a CTR to a P1 and I think it is a natural progression in terms of stepping up in power to the next level. Also the P1 is easy to get in and drive fast in all conditions whereas other cars with DCCD, etc are more of a handful in the wet.

I did 40k miles in 2 years and loved every minute of it.

I say take one for a test drive (pref one with big brake upgrade) and I bet you'll fall in love with it.

good choice mate, driven one their awesome as standard. wouldnt bother modding it up (apart from brakes as mentioned) detailed history is absolutely vital.hope to have one soon me self

Did you ever have any problems with yours terry? as ive heard about a few engines going bang?

not a thing mate. In 2 years and 40k miles, I did about 4 trackdays, one hillclimb, the nurburgring and a 2500 mile european tour including driving 15 Mountain passes in the Swiss Alps.

But maybe I was lucky????

All I would suggest is that you get a P1 decatted (or sports cat) and remapped (Tek3 remap from Bob Rawle for about £650). Get a knocklink fitted and use Optimax. Then hopefully you'll be ok - this is what I did.

They only go bang because idiots thrash them from cold
Mine is pushing 380bhp ..with out probs.......even at constant insane speed (140 plus)
Decat it ..and get it map correct by pros and you will not have a problem .
ps better still fit an Apex, autotronic ,motec ecu for even more power

Pretty much as above really, I have had my P1 for 18 months(20K) and it really is a fantastic car.

not good advice, they dont like being held flat out for any length of time. Mine was decatted and mapped (by the best in the business) 2 weeks later it knocked a big end out. Purely down to being held at 150mph+ for a few miles.

Good advice on thrashing from cold though. Read This thread, good advice from Bob Rawle and AndyF on P1/STi5 engine issues

200bhp through the front wheels is just not as satisfying as 280bhp through 4...I mean power off to correct understeer - hardly requires a lot of skill - grannies do it automatically when they panic on greasy roundabouts!! - wouldn't you rather want to oversteer like mad and add MUCH MORE power and spend a good few seconds crazily drifting perilously out of control towards dangerous walls and railings until you manage to find that magical balance ? NOW THAT'S DRIVING-ENTERTAINMENT!

Don't worry too much about extreme HP right now - get a good solid reliable stock car first - drive it - MASTER IT - then get some mods if you think you need em...
I always though I was a great driver until I got a serious motor - then I found out I was UTTER CRAP!Took a long time to learn how to drive - I'm still nowhere near now!

Thats the best way until you've got used to it, no point even thinking about modding until then. You'll find it quite a good leap up in terms of acceleration etc.

Im sure it'll keep you happy for a few weeks before you start thinking of spending your hard earned on mods

decat and remap will give you about 300-320 bhp / 295-315 ft/lb depending on the dyno.

Knocklink is a must if you are modding. senses detonation in the combustion chamber and gives you a visual warning of impending big bills, hopefully in timre for you to stop them.

High performance cars are there to be driven
all cars and Bikes that I have had has been driven close to thier limits (130 plus) for a good few miles ( I commute alot from London to the N. west) and never had a engine blown on me ( touch wood )
it all depends on your style of driving
but each to thier own

I did say they dont like being driven flat out. 130mph is not flat out . dont see how your driving style will differ from mine, Michael Schumacers, Sebastian loebs, Valentino Rossis etc when the needles round at 5.00 PM TBH.

I did say 130 plus
ps needles around 5pm = in the RED ZONE = blown engine
