I just got a tom tom 300 for christmas and its brilliant. You can also pay about 40-50 quid extra and get all the 'safety blackspots' ie fixed cameras stored into it as well. Tom tom are regarded as one of if not the best on the market at the moment and without being biased i would agree as its worked faultlessly so far. You can get one foe about £270.

Personally I'd go for an HP iPAC with TomTom loaded on it. That way you've got Sat Nav, fixed speed camera warning, a handheld computer and film player, all for roughly the same price as a Sat Nav system.

The only problem with it is that you won't get the laser or mobile radar detection but to be honest, by the time you react to the laser warning you've been had anyway. Therefore all you're gaining from a "radar detection system" is mobile camera detection (assuming they still use radar, which I doubt).

You can pick up a second hand iPAC 2210 for about £170, in fact there's a guy selling one on SN in the for sale section but he's asking for a bit more for his, (although in all fairness he is selling it with a shed load of other goodies including the TomTom software).

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=480402

(keep in mind that you can always "find" backup copies of the latest TomTom software from somewhere )

Id broadly agree; but Id suggest Mitac Mio168; its a PDA which has an in-built GPS receiver. All of the advantages mentioned about but without the need to buy/use an external battery powered bluetooth GPS receiver.

Get a PDA, ideally with a built-in GPS receiver, and a renegade copy of TomTom5 off t'eBay. If you take my advice and get a Mitac Mio itll set you back about £200 delivered, budget about £5 for the skanked copy of TT5 and £20 for a 512MB SD card. You only need a 128MB card for TomTom but the remaining space will allow you to install the enhanced UK map, other European maps or MPEG/DivX video or MP3s.

For less than the cost of a Tom Tom One youll have a better, lighter, more portable Tom Tom based GPS which is also a PDA and on which you can watch video or listen to MP3s.

I just got a Navman PiN 570 as mentioned above, and its great!!!
As its also a pocket PC I've got all my work files on there with all my customer details, and it backs up to my PC and updates both copies, so I can put new details in on either and it sorts it all out for me!
Great bit of kit, couldn't recommend it enough!

No probs, was thinking of buying it myself but have decided to spend my cash on a UK300 spoiler (already on the car) and some gauges!

Would be a good buy for someone though, a friend of mine has the iPAC 2210 and it's a great bit of kit.

Rich.

Interesting point this. I'm in the market to get a sat nav unit at the moment and from what I've read and need it seemed the Tom Tom One would be the best bet. It makes sense what you say re the Mitac but, correct me if I'm wrong, as an out and out SatNav unit surely the dedicated Tom Tom One would be better? Better, newer chipset, better reception/signal etc??

Ive got a Tom Tom One. <220 from PC world before xmas. Really pleased with it. You can then add on different maps, POI's etc. Have a look at the Tomtom website

From the reviews I've read on the Tom Toms they all say to go for the One over the GO 300 now. I was going to get it from PC World for the £219 before Xmas myself but didn't and now that offers gone! Back up to £249 now. Typical!

Any answer to that is subjective, but Id disagree. All dedicated kit is essentially a low end PDA but without the functionality. The GPS receiver in my Mio168 is the equal of the Garmin GPS12XL that Ive had for a number of years and they dont really come better than that. Its grip on a signal is as tenacious as any that I have seen. The software itself is identical in every practical respect; at least it is as far as I have been able to see when Ive looked at several TomTom units.

As an aside the Mitac comes with a good quality car cradle and a superb external antennae, although I havent had to use that, even behind an athermic screen.
