go for a uk car if you have the option and money, i say this because you wont have to add octain booster to the fuel to emulate the 100ron they have in japan, if it ends up being an import you buy, get a salloon because they have a larger td05turbo than the wagon which runs the td04 i say this because there are a couple of good chips out there that fit the salloons which map for 97ron fuel and give 40bhp increases (scoobyecu/voschips)and they are affordable too compared to tailormade remaps using apexi pfc ect.

hope this helps

jdm v1 wrx is 240 bhp and v2 is 260 where as uk scoobs are only 208bhp and 215bhp. also you get extra goodies on the jap cars on the downside insurance can be a major biach .And as stated above you need to use optimax and ideally octane booster.

Depends on what you want bud.

I own a Classic WRX Wagon which has the TD04 Turbo and it's great
for general street driving because of it's quick spool up.

The TD05 is alot laggier but does have more tuning potential
if you want to go that route.

Maximum capabilities on the TD04 are around 280bhp.

I will say that if you do alot of motorway driving the UK version
would be a better choice as the gearing is longer.

The imports have a closer/quicker ratio gearbox, which make for
quicker acceleration.

The UK car is safe on our fuel where as the Import would need a booster
unless it's a Wagon and it will be safe on just Optimax due to the fact
that the map is not as aggressive as the saloons.

Good hunting and enjoy

ive been running my93 import now for a year on just optimax and its fine(standard boost) i think its the sti import from 96 on that demand 100ron fuel if left standard. i also think the v2 sti is the same engine as v1 wrx. my import is great ffsr , abs , air con ect ect and it all works. i paid under 4k also for a 77k car and it will wack 150 no probs. go for it , just know what you are looking for and try to buy standard as the wrong combo of mods can very quickly lead to trouble and big bucks to put right. cant realy comment on uk cars as i havent even sat in one. good luck

How old are you mate, and how much No claims bonus do you have. If you're under 25 with no much no-claims, then the insurance alone could cost you the best part of half of your budget.

My personal opinion is that there aren't many genuinely good scoobies out there for 4k. Buying an import of the kind of age you'd be looking at is dicey, because you don't know that its always been run on SUL and OB. Unless you can find one that's been remapped for UK fuel as soon as it hit our shores then I personally wouldn't touch em! The vast majority of engine failures that occur in scoobies do so on imports and a rebuild will set you back 2.5k
