Default Do I need two new tyres? Quick reply appreciated.

Just got a puncture on the way to work and it is a large nail which looks like it may not be fixed - All 4 tyres were replaced about 2-3000 miles ago and there is some wear (Probably 5mm left). Can I get away with just replacing the one since there is quite a lot of thread on the other tyres or should I replace both on the same axle.

Absolutely gutted - Just my luck - Just over a week till xmas!!!! I can feel a wallet emptying moment coming on.

I know its in the wrong forum but I really want a quick response before emptying my wallet!!

Also it is in the centre of the tread but the nail is huge and appears to have slightly torn it.

I had a similar issue a while back and the car was in with Subaru for a service anyway, they only replaced the 1 tyre that was punctured. The other is going to need replacing soon due to wear anyway. So I guess it's no big issue in terms of potential damage to the car, other than you may have one side that is more grippy than the other.

Can it be repaired? Where is the puncture, how much damage has been done and did you drive it for long whilst flat? Garages can sometimes be quick to say you need a new tyre (or two) as it's nice business for them.

I found the following info on the internet:-

What can be repaired?
(In accordance with British Standards (BSAU 159))
Only certain areas of the tyre can be repaired. This is demonstrated below by Area’T’

Repairable Area - Definition of Area'T'

The repairable area 'T' is defined as a percentage of the tyre's nominal section width and this is dependant on the type and size of the tyre.

Radial Ply tyres – Minor Repairs to Radial Tyres for Cars, Vans, and Commercial Vehicles

AREA T Defined as Percentage of Nominal Section Width

CAR

Up to and including 155mm
60%

Above 155mm to 200mm
65%

Above 200mm
70%

Radial Tyre Limitations: Straight Penetration Damage (After Preparation)

Type Of Tyre
Maximum size of damage at base of injury in Area T

Car
6mm

So quote the British Standard to your garage and get them to show you where the damage exceeds the regulations.

If it legally must be replaced, you might be able to pick up a tyre of the same batch as the other 3, in which case there won't be a great risk if you just replace the one tyre. In an ideal world you'd have both tyres on the same axle as identical as possible, but as they're quite new there's less risk of replacing just the one (provided it is in all other ways identical, make, size etc)

Well the tread seemed to have a little tear where the bolt went in. It did look bad to me although it was in the area stated.

It was bigger than 6mm too.

Whilst it might be legal to do so - repairing tyres on a performance car doesn't seem wise to me (assuming you drive it anywhere near the way it should be!)

I had a tyre repaired after having a puncture (screw).

Wasnt ideal but the tyres still had about 6 months in them before they all needed changing.

I had tyres repaired with c.450 BHP and never had a problem, including track work.
