Hello mate i used to own a type R version 4 until the engine blew up and i sold it after 6 months as i lost faith in the car. think that was down to the half whit i bought it off drilled a whole in the water expension tank when putting the new style bumper n and all the coolant ran out without him realising and melting the piston. wish i knew then what i no now.
Anyway, before all that happenend it was a class car, with ita short gearing it went like **** off a stick, only thing was in top gear driving it was loud and drank the feul and if i can remember 80 mph was nearly 5000 rpm on the rev counter. P1 has the longer gearing which in some respects better for long ditance but u loose the power lower down. thats why i like the 6 speed box in my current STi as u get the best of both worlds.
but yes the 5/6 are lovely looking cars and fast as fu*k.
i would get it mapped for uk fuel tho as it can cook the engine if its not.
hope this helps

There are many types of classic sti.......need to be more specific about which variant your looking for before you get owners gloating about them.
Like i said, research the Type r corner, loads of info on alternative to p1.

from your reply i assume that all classic sti s are type rs or ra s? or is there a stock sti, which i think will be suitable, dont think i could cope with 120 tops, and remaps etc.

in short - the P1 is a 2 door, as are the type r's. The Sti V5/6's are 4 door saloons (I have a V5. I think the engine in the V's is the same as the P1 but could be mistaken.
mine is pretty fast as stock but has sensible 4 doors......

Wahey another stockie boy on here, get to the northern section mate and check out the SMACS meets
Use the search function on here mate and do research on them, a P1 is based on a version 5 type R but "tamed" down for the british roads. No DCCD on a P1 as on a version 5. IMO if you want an agressive car go for the type R but if you want better residuals then go for the P1!

The uk only ever got the models: (There was also the Catalunya/Terzo, but these the models you need to worry about)
Turbo 2000 - 208-215 bhp 4dr
RB5 4dr-same i think but many had ppp (prodrive performance pack) fitted giving 240bhp.
P1 2door based on sti 5 type r (280bhp)
All wrx/sti's are imports in classic form (upto 2000/2001)
I have an sti 4 (1998) 4 door. Put it on the dyno when standard and gave 293bhp.

All i can say is try a classic sti import. I've recently acquired a sti v2 import and its an absolute hoot. The car is far from refined in my opinion (usually interior rattle, noisy top end) but thats not owning a sti is about, these machines are raw and handle like go-karts. Pay slightly more and get a good example is my final advice.

WRX Type-R (closest model to the P1 - without DCCD but with ABS)
WRX STi Type-R
WRX STi Type-R V-Limited (same as normal STi but with Roof Vent)
The classic STi models come in 6 variants:
Type-R
4 Door Saloon
Type-RA
Wagon
S201
22B
All classic STi's will need to be re-mapped for UK fuel.

I have run my sti 4 for 2 years (12K) on optimax. Not had a remap, just had it checked on the rolling road (power engineering) to make sure it was running ok when I bought it.
Had no problems and curently on 72K.

The thing with the fuelling is that potentially it can cause problems and you'll never know until it goes....
if you plan on keeping the car for a long time, get a decat on it and get it remapped for uk fuel - will also free up some ponies with the decat etc etc.
Alternatively, just get some octane booster and use optimax. If you look at the P1 as basically an import but with a UK tag - ure about there...
Dunno if I'm right but didn't the P1's start out as Type R's originally????
A nice, low milage V6 (4 door 1st - Type R if I had the wonga) that was imported new to the UK and has massive history would be my ideal buy - you need someone who has looked after it while they've had it.
As far as I know, you can't register these in the UK if you import one now as there isn't a model report available unless things have moved on in the last few months...

I imported my Type-R STI V5 into the UK 3 weeks ago. The Department of Transport told me it was the last one allowed to be imported, Registered and SVA'd in the UK. I didn't need a model report because of my special circumstances, ie. job!

The one you've got sounds like a V5 type r limited which was actually much closer to std - on sale until march 99 with the roof vent on....which is more like what you've described. This one had the red inserts on the seats...
A WRX Type R STi Version VI Limited should have the following:
blue dash and console inserts
aliminium pedals
(full) blue front seats
STi titanium gear ****
roof vent
pink six star badge
Curiously tho, there should be a nubered plaque somewhere as there was only 1000 made..

in fact, I've just seen a pic or yours and it looks like a Version V....
Here's my 4 door V5...

and a pic of a V6
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y187/Horico/V6.jpg
Notice the major difference on the front bumper - the V6 has a deeper splitter - all shared with the type r versions

An Sti Type R has 2 doors and a boot - a 3 door car has a hatchback like a Civic, which Subaru hasn't made so far, although next year's model sadly looks like it might be one.
