Skyline, EVO, Cupra R, Focus RS/ST, Astra VXR, Megane Trophy to name but a few. As the Impreza you mention has PPP, add a remap (or equiv) to the relevant turbo cars above to make it fair.... see, much better !!

He said NEW, so whilst yes you can go and buy a Cupra r it will be old stock that has more likely than not been sat on an airfield for more than a few months . Has 2wd and whilst a competent car not in the same league when it comes to power delivery / handling.

Skyline???? for 25k brandnew - not to my knowledge (a few years old yes but not new).

EVO - maybe, just but the comparison between them is oh so different, for instance whilst nobody would argue the performance of the EVO is outstanding, ride quality and noise may be a little hard to live with when compared with a PPP wrx.

Astra VXR - me thinks not, get it mapped and no warranty for starters, plus by all accounts struggles a little putting down the std 240bhp through the front wheels.

Focus ST - fine car if you like that sort of thing but again would it cope with 260 bhp + and still keep up and launch as well as a WRX PPP??

Megane - he said smiles for miles not complete frustration at dealer service and p*ss poor build quality and reliability . Had to laugh when the megane and VXR were being tested by 5th gear a few weeks back, how did I laugh when the esp, abs packed in and then the ECU on the megane went into limp home mode, quality french engineering.

Anyway probably the nearest rival that has nearly enough power and the ability to put it down is the Golf R32 - build quality exceeds that of a wrx, it has 4wd and a v6 that will 0 - 60 in 6.2 not great but it will probably be nearer to the scoob in the twisties without chucking itself through the 1st hedge backwards.

I have nothing against the VXR, ST, Leon or evo just don't mention Renault to me .

Rant over

Paul

OK missed the word new myself too.......

Im sure caterham and westy do cars for under £25K which would be quick and most certainly put a bigger smile on your face.

I think its yet to be proven that the clio trophy would be slower, unless your talking about boring drag strip stuff and thats not going to make you smile now is it?

Golf? Hope you don't mean the old R32, came last in a number of hot hatch tests that included Cupra R, Alfa GTA, Audi S3 etc. Well known for shying away from anything twisty...

God can you imagine a Caterham or westie on a freezing cold day in the rain or snow - my teeth are chattering already. I don't doubt they would have the scoob on performance though but comfort in the winter, I know which I would go for............................................ the evo of course, could I live with the additional servicing and running costs I doubt it somehow.

I'll stick with my Triple 333 which by the way I bought instead of a VXR Astra, so when I say I have nothing against the VXR I mean it - would I swap for a VXR now? Hmmmmmmm NO, NO and double NO.

Nope I mean this one - the brand new just launched one

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/new_cars/new_golf_hatch/r32

It was tested in EVO or something quite recently with the BMW 130 sport and a WRX, did very well by all accounts.

I don't know, like scoob's the VW badge has plenty of enthusiasts as well, whether it will prove as popular as the GTi remains to be seen. Time will tell no doubt, in fairness it looks a nice enough package although personally i know where I would put my money and it's not with VW.

RX8 for £22K - lot of fun, RWD, well made, handles better than a Scoob, if not quite so urgent in a straight line (although not far off)

That's not accurate at all Gary I quote directly from the magazine which I have in my hands now:

"I doubt that 21k can buy you any more cross country speed in any shape or form"

They also said that really the scooby deserved much better than its final place and that the reason it finished in 9th was just cause they said it didn't move its game on significantly. I put it to them that they've already answered their own point in the above quote. The scooby doesn't need to move things forward by much; it's already pretty damned good!

I also put it to them that the Clio is equally guilty of not moving the game forward (also cause it doesn't have to- the 182 is a fine hot hatch). They should at least be consistent in their criticism.

If you have 25k you wont be buying a clio now will you. A clio cup maybe similar in performance to a WRX but not one with PPP. As for amount of car for the money well its teeny. Front wheel drive is allways a compromise when it comes to performance and with 25k you certainly dont have to compromise on anything as youve more than enough money to get a far better rwd or awd car. Every time a discussion like this comes up some allways mentions the clio. Even if the thread was 35k or 45k some **** would put it forward as an option. Clios are good cars but come on, not when your budget is 25k.
