lol

Knackered synchromesh? Has it been crunching into 5th for a while.

Or have you struck something that may have affected the linkage? Does the linkage move freely enough for the rest of the gears, as in does the gear lever feel any different?

also no crunching at all, rest of the gears seem ok no difference, it kinda feels like something is blocking going into 5th,anyway car booked into garage next week to get Gearbox stripped.

Woodruff key has probably snapped which is disallowing selection (only affects 5th). I have just had my WRX box rebuilt which was crunching into 3rd aswell (albeit only at 7000rpm). Cheap part to buy and you may not have to strip the box if the other gears are ok.

Thx for that, is it better to get the whole box recond, while the mechanic is at it?

Hitting the brick wall might have done it

Well yes i got him to do that to mine. Mind you none of the bearings were worn but he replaced a few gaskets, 3rd gear syncro hub, woodruff key etc,. Parts were about 200. Depends if your box is genuinely worn or just not torqued up properly like mine was. For some reason it looked like the box had been off and that was what caused the problems. If i had a box where i found bearings etc were worn i'd get rid of the car because i'd bet you the next thing you'll be replacing is the big-end bearing on the engine and that's stupid money! Get the guy to check the box over. If it seems low mileage it's probably worth doing the small bits i did. If it whines or all the teeth on the gears are jagged sell the ******* on, because this condition will probably be mirrored in the engine.

5th gear locking nut is loose as everyone else says. Happens sooner or later on most cars.

Yes.
No mate **** getting a 2nd hand box unless you need to. They're about 500-700 and then there's the fitting! Sometimes the box just isn't torqued up properly and it causes play in the output shaft which in turn can cause the fixing key for 5th to break or snap. Hence you end up with no 5th. I could select mine but it would jut in and out under torque and was basically unuseable. Cheap parts causing quite major symptoms. Your only dilamma is finding someone to do the labour cheaply enough. Forget your local garage!

The mechanic is an old friend of mine, has always serviced my car and he put in the new engine in last july. All this info is making me feel a lot better now, but im the "worse case senerio kind of person" so hopefully he will check the loose nut and when hes finished he will torque 5th gear for me.

Sad really today, seeing all the scoobs pass me by and i cant wave, in the wifes Accent.

2 days without scoob now.. i need a "Scooby fix".

Again thx for the very helpful info.

May have been the rattle
Try taking it back to subaru and see if they will do a good will gesture as your car is only just out of warranty

Well worse possible news, Gearbox fooked,

5th gear gone, and other gears well worn, and a mass of metal filings in gear oil.

So bit the bullet and got a 2nd hand gearbox from Traynors in Northern Ireland.

700 euros delivered to Dublin, so if all goes well back in my baby on Saturday.

Thx again all for the advice and help.
