Smile HELLO im new!

hi,

im marc im currently 19 and live on the southcost of england.
The reson im joining your fourm is i have always been interested in scoobys, i will hopefully be buying one next year when im 20 for insurence reasons, also for the same insurence reasons i am looking at a turbo 2000 on a 99/00 plate as it is only group 17 rather than 20. just a few questons then... is the turbo 2000 a quick car? i meen obviously its quick but why is the insurence lower? ive just resently lest my job at honda were i used to drive all the cars including civic type Rs and S2000s i thought these were quick, how does it compair to these? One more question insurence is deffinatly expencive with thease cars but who offers the best deals, ive have a few quotes for a 19yr but there in the regon of £2400-2700, im hoping it will go down next year.

thanks for your time
MARC

Honestly wouldnt have thought that the insurance would drop a hell of a lot from 19 - 20. Would still have thought that the best part of 2k would be spent.

Good luck, hope you get what you want.

This may be worth a try for Insurance.

Go to www.moneysupermarket.com. Click on car insurance, fill in your details and you will see which of the 50 or so companies will give you a quote.

Then go back and up your age to 20 and see what effect it has.

I used to have a 'T' reg Turbo 2000. Its well quick mate. 225bhp. Loved it! Only reason I sold it, was I had to move abroad.

Now got WRX STi Type-R version 5!

Hi,

1) insurance is going to hurt if you're below 25 I'm afraid. Expect around the 2.5k mark. Despite it's lower rating the classic Scooby often costs more than the new age WRXs and even the new age STis to insure.

2) It's a quick car yes, it will "feel" significantly faster thant he VTEC engined Hondas owing to the Turbo's torque advantage. As for the figures, I believe the calssic scooby has the S2000 and Civic type R licked on all the performance benchmarks; the magnitude of the difference may not always be evident on the road all things being equal though. Where the Scooby will show a demonstrable advantage is in off line traction (which is awesome) and road-holding when things get bumpy and/or slippy; it puts its power down very well indeed.

3) You didn't ask, but you should know these are expensive cars to run. They drink like George best (Super Unleaded), they require frequent servicing to remain reliable, consumables aren't cheap (budget about £100 a corner for tyres and 100+ for decent brake pads, changing a clutch is a 4/5 hour job) and you will want to modify it (again not cheap). Be aware of this when budgeting. The temptation maybe to scrimp on the maintenance to subsidise high insurance costs, but an engine re-build would be even more expensive than your annual premium.

Good luck.

DO make sure you get current quotes BEFORE buying. My eldest is 19, has a 1.4 Ibiza 53 plater, and wants a 1.9 TDi 160 Cupra.

He can't find anyone to take him on at 19, and most won't at 20. He can get reasonable quotes at 21 though.

Worth waiting an extra year, and spending more on a car, less on insurance?

Yeah, I know.............it's not what he wants to hear either

Insurance will be expensive but not mental, i got my MY00 uk turbo when i was 21 and paid £1600 fully comp with 6 points.

DO bear in mind the running costs though, especially with fuel prices the way they are. Other than that, welcome aboard.

Shame your not another 19 yr old blond bird, we need more of them (with pics of course)

Welcome Marc,
My first Scooby was a MY00 turbo, I owned it for nearly 5 years and loved every minute, you won't be disappointed. The std MY00 is not regarded as one of the quickest Scooby's and there are many cars which will quite happily keep up, however, their power is very useable in all weather conditions. I’m sure you’ll love it.

try www.confused.com for insurance, i am 35 and got full cover for just under £400, but be careful, do not always go for the cheapest and take care at looking at the small print. i.e excess and so on. but welcome and good luck

Who was that with? I am paying that now aged 30 with 3 years ncb with asda (underwritten by norwich union), clean licence as well. A lot of the specialists wouldnt insure me unless I had at least 1 yr experience driving the car. Dont understand that as it is like them telling me to drive without insurance for a year. This was after owning a slightly modified gtir for 2 yrs as well.
Manchester postcode though so that could be the reason.

We get crucified on our postcode around here. Both wife and myself are 35+ both have full NCD but still ended up paying £700 although this was with protected bonus. Also they wanted proof that extra security was fitted. At the time I did a quote using an Inverness postcode just to compare. It was only £230. Can't remember if this was protected or not.
Thinking of moving to Scotland. May be able to get out of 2nd gear then.

Welcome to SN mate
Well im 23, with 3 yrs ncb and i pay 1400 with tescos on a turbo 2000 valued at 8000 (with a tracker & cat 1 alarm) which was the best i could find anywhere
I previosly & still do own a 2.0ltr 16v corsa which kept up with civic type r s till about 135 then they started to loose me. the car is great fun and much much quicker than my corsa i eat civics for breakfast now lol not raced a s2000 yet. The handling is out of this world absolutly amazing, but trust the moding bug is contageous i thought ill buy a scooby and keep it standard because i spent so much money tuning my corsa but oh no the list of things im gonnna do to it is getting bigger and bigger day by day and trust me it uses more petrol than u could ever imagine if u wana have fun anyway. buy one, even tho they cost a bomb to run & upkeep u wont regret it

If it was on Amber then it shouldn't have flashed mate, they only go off if you pass a certain threshold on red. Sometimes, however, the authorities are sneaky and put a conventional gatso on a junction knowing full well that sometimes people will speed up to get across on amber

If its an SP30 and its your first one, it shouldn't matter too much for insurance, if its a failing to stop at a red light (can't recall the code) It may make a quite significant difference.

Sorry!

Did you see two flashes?

I got flashed going through a red light (aparantly it had been red for 0.09 of a second) a TS10 is the official code 3 points and a sixty quid fine. I lost my licence for doing it, only because i already had three points for speeding. six points in my first six months of having a licence so i said bye bye to my licence and had to do it all again (was back on the roads in six weeks tho). As far as im aware a ts10 makes hardly any difference to insurance at all on its own so i wouldnt worry too much but expect to have your first three points and a sixty quid fine on its way to you. Unless (hopefully) it was flashing someone else fingers crossed ay
