Default ecu reset trouble

hi all,

after replacing the maf i reset the ecu, when the cel started to flash (which happened after a couple of seconds of driving instead of the quoted minute) to indicate there where no faults and the reset is complete, i stopped, turned the engine/ignition off and disconected both wires.

but now the cel is constantly flashing (on off on off - the no fault pattern) when the ignition is turned on including if i'm driving. i tried reseting it again, but exactly the same. so i pulled the jack plug off the maf to bring up a fault code (which it did) thinking it might cure the flashing once i reconnected the jack plug and cleared the code - still flashing. so i disconcted the battery for approx 2 hours but that didn't work either.

any ideas???

I understood the re-set should be carried out with the engine NOT running but the ignition in the ON position then press accelarator to the floor, then half way through depressing the pedal hold for 20 seconds.

ECU Reset
On early MYs (especially pre MY97) the ECU retards the ignition when knock is detected, however, it is very slow to advance the timing again. An ECU reset will restore the car to factory default settings. This will remove any stored fault codes and restore ignition advance. It is possible to reset the ECU by following these steps:

Turn ignition OFF

Connect Read Memory Connectors & Test Mode Connectors
(jumper 5) [black connectors] – (jumper 6) [green connectors]

Turn ignition ON (engine off)

Engine Check lamp turns on

Depress accelerator pedal completely

Then return it to the half-throttle position and hold it there for two seconds

Release pedal completely

Start engine

Code is indicated by Pulsing lamp

If a fault is detected - Check ECU Code

If no fault is detected - drive the car sensible for a couple of minutes
i.e. until warm (do not run tall & do not thrash it!)

When the ECU has been reset the Check Engine Light will flash

Code is indicated by Pulsing lamp

If a fault is detected Check ECU Code

Turn ignition OFF & Disconnect Connectors

If there is a fault Check Appropriate

Have you disconnected both pairs of wires under the dash? The ones with black connectors are for diagnostics, it sounds like you still have those connected and it's flashing the all-clear signal.

i've just reconnected the battery, double checking that both jack plugs where separated (which they where) and its still flashing, i've tried plugging them back in and separating them but its made no difference.

I disconnected the wrong black wires last time - it was a multi plug I disconnected (I know - do not say anything!!!) Try that. It turns out I disconnected a starter switch instead!! Good luck mate!!
