Red face What cars Not To Race?

After reading some of the things people have wrote on here bout certain cars being just as fast as their impreza. Can someone post a list of cars that will stay with an impreza from the lights e.g. 1/4.

I read that somebodys saxo could keep up with there wrx

Surely this isnt correct. I no that there are things that will be as fast bout I find this hard to believe, as I have raced a v8 bmw and kept up with him n i only got a classic uk impreza.

I got a classic UK Turbo that gets to 100mph in 11.5 secs and still got overtaken by a Seat Ibiza (modded)....pretty funny really.

Nape.

How long's a piece of string ... depends on model, MY, if modified or not etc.

Keeping with standard 2005 cars general consensus seems to be that most reasonably fast cars will stay with a current WRX (!) less so with a PPP version, even less so with an STi and not much with an STi PPP! Spec C anyone ...

Don't start me on the twisties though ...

TX.

Cant see many hot hatches beat you on quarter mile, 4WD always gets the best over any hot hatch with FWD, Cars like BMW M3's, Audi S4, Merc AMG's most £30k+ RWD and 4wd performance cars will beat most standard UK Spec scoobys like Turbo 2000, WRX's etc, but if I spent £30k+ on a car, I would expect it to have a bit of poke.

It just seemed daft that a fwd 1.6 engine car would be able to stay with a 2.0 4wd turbo.

Does any1 no a website where you can get performance figures for all different car manufactures. i used modify.com and the figure on there are definitely not correct

Cheers

I would expect the top of the range Bmw, Mercs, Audi, to especially for the sortta money you pay for them. Think for the money you pay especially nowadays the Impreza has to be the best buy for the performance

You can't infer rolling performance from 0-x mph times at which Subarus do well.

If you add a few hundred horsepower to the car, not much will worry you apart from police cars, well ridden one litre bikes and running costs from breakages.

I can certainley recommend a car not to tussle with, M1 motorway approach road early evening 2 weeks ago I saw xenon lights closing in quickly behind me, dropped a gear (or two!) in order to "show him" the back of my STi, alongside me pulls up a 55 plate brand spanker BMW M5, he knew the score kept level looked over then pulled away like a runaway train, my rev counter red light beeping every gear couldn't touch him .... proper acceleration

You need to be more specific as Subarus vary so much in performance, even from the factory. Some will be mid/high 14s and others high 12s.

Some quick cars to look out for:

996 Turbo(man): 12.8secs@113mph & 0-100mph in 10secs (ref: EVO issue 070)
'99 GT3: 13.0secs@110mph & 0-100mph in 10.3secs (ref: Top Gear issue 073)
(some MY may have recorded slightly different figures)

From memory:

Lambo Gallardo 11.8s
Porsche 996 Turbo with power upgrade: 12.2-12.4s
Ferrari 355: 12.8-13.0s

Then obviously equivalent or higher models of EVOs etc.

I had a tussle with a new M5 off a small roundabout (20 mph) and onto the by-pass near me, so 2nd, then 3rd. We were identical to around 80mph then both backed off. Having said that, those cars are amazing and if I tried from 80mph up, he would pi55 all over me. Once they are rolling properly they are very fast.

Mine? Classic STI version 3 (4.5 secs)

Question

Am i right in thinking the new M5's are in the region of 500 bhp?

Rolling start it was, and i started noticing my bonnet lifting up well before 5th or 6th gear, as well as the beemers 4 exhaust pipes!

Impreza's are not the top dog like they were in the early 90's, times (and engines) have moved on since then. Don't be surprised if you get beat by *ordinary* looking cars...

Don't race a BMW 535d. An unfortunate recipent from this very forum found out the hard way, that on the Queens highway you will get good hiding. Also I would stay away from 330's and any Audi that has an S or RS before some numbers. Some new age hot hatch's might trouble you too:

Astra VXR
Megane 225 Cup
Leon Cupra R
Civic Type R

I had a Saxo VTS before my scooby and against a 100% standard scooby it would lose. However from a rolling start the scooby could only creep away slowly. Standard classics are not that fast these days. My £2k 406 V6 used to keep up with them from 40-140mph no problem (not losing an inch) and I'd imagine it would slowly overtake a standard bugeye. Decat a scooby though and its a different animal

I remember when I was at College [1998] my mate had a very mint late RS turbo Fiesta. Out the box in every way, and he managed to keep up with a new [then] Scooby estate that one of the other lads had. I was well impressed for a Fiesta. But that was back in the days when I thought a fast car was determined by it's 0-60 time.

Yep the new M5 in "standard" mode is 400 hp, hit the M switch and you have 507 bhp !

I have jus changed from an RX8 231 to a standard bug-eye WRX... hard to say cos of the huge difference in power delivery between a rotary versus a turbo but i think it would be pretty close....

Scoob off the line would take it cos of 4WD but from a rolling start i wouldn't be sure.... the RX8 redlines at 9500rpms so you have to hit about 4500 before the third port opens and it comes to life, from there to the beeeeeeeep it jus pulls harder and harder.....

0 - 60 - The Scoob every time....
60 - 120 - Think the RX8 would take it....

Having said that, once i uprate induction, take out my up-pipe and centre cat i'm hoping the weight will shift back to the WRX and then once its re-mapped...... no competition!

Got a pretty impressive array of cars in my works car park. (See below)
Just need to get a dry day (bloody unlikely in Aberdeen) to get everybody out one lunchtime for a bit of a go up the dual carriageway.

Me 55 wrx (Standard)
R32 Golf
Honda Civic Type R
911 Carrera S
Merc E55 AMG
Mk2 Golf GTI 16v (BRM Motorsport Conversion) - Very Quick
03 plate M3
Renault Clio Sport Trophy
Mini Cooper S

Christ, I could do a magazine article on all these cars. What a shoot out!!!!
