I recently parted company with a my99 lightly tuned,decat/filter/remap etc and was dissapointed when test drove a p1.

Ended up with a my99 555 wrc sti type ra ..

If your after comfort go for the 03 sti,but for a wild ride get a jdm type r/ra.

How many times does this topic appear???

My personal view, you are more likely to find a good P1 and it will be easier to sell. The ECU on the P1 would need changing or re mapping to keep me happy, Subaru really skimped there as they used an STi5 map which isnt right for UK fuel. They stuck a broquet in the tank as a half *** effort, which is tantamount to adimitting they were aware the ECU wasnt right.

They are much more expensive, and a Type R has the diff and water spray. Try them both.

Well if you can afford it I would go for an STi and Ecutek it. I had a P1 and is nowhere near as good as my STi

Did you Ecutek the P1 too?? Each to their own, but a decatted and Tek3'd P1 would be my choice all day long (although I am biased as I do own one).

Scooby brother, try and explain that one???

You know the P1 is pretty much an STi type R without the adjustable diff and a few other differences? Suspension is more suited to UK roads too IMO.

the fellas asked sti8 or p1, and then as normal you get the typeR boys banging on (apart from iwan who has a type R but wont bang on unless asked, and then he speaks sense.)

i have a P1, and have had a few test drives in a sti8. im not a new age looks hater at all, in fact i like them as much as a P1 but in a different way.

it depends on what you are after. i find the sti8 far more sanitisied, a little bit boring if you like, and certainly not as communicative as a P1. a standard P1 is easily as quick as a PPP'd sti8. decatted and tek3'd the p1 eats the STI8 ppp.

people say the new age car handles better than a P1, but dont agree. and thats from driving them both and playing with a mate who has a sti8

sti8 will probably be more reliable though it has to be said. i just find them a little bit characterless. hey, lets face it, they are all great cars.

I went from a highly modded TypeR to a Highly modded STI8 JDM.

After 3 years of TypeR, I just wanted something newer and I got pretty much all the same standard toys including DCCD (A), but 4 Doors.

The only downside was having to give up, AP's. Leda's, Electric Sunroof and Electric seats All of which you wouldn't get on a standard R anyway.

But I did get HID's and fitted some other upgrades such as ALK and Rollbars that I had on the classic.

And Im happy!

Choosing between an Sti8 and a P1 i'd go for the P1 (albeit i'm slightly biased!) ... but I guess it depends on what you're after in a car...! If it's raw speed and character (and a bit of exclusivity etc) the P1 is the one to go for but if you prefer refinement then perhaps the Sti might be more apt.

If you're anything like me you'll test drive the P1 and forget there was ever a decision to be made ... I reckon they're awesome cars ... and IMHO probably one of the best-looking Impreza's made ... classic shape still turns heads just as much as 'back in the day'...!

richee,

Ive had a Type R and it was loads of fun but a bit skitish to drive with the chassis being so ridgid with all those braces.
it also was crap on juice due to the short ratio group N gear box which is a pain if you do much dual carrageway driving.

ive got an Sti 8 now and it my favorit out of all my Scoobs, like the chaps say much more conservative to drive normally but hell she goes well if you got them slightly modded.

personaly id go for the 8 its a much safer bet

The only downside of the newer cars is the weight. You need an extra 30BHP to compare with the performance of the classic in a straight line.
Ive got over 370, so i dont care

I think P1's were nice when they were under 4 years old, but they have had their time now. At the end of the day its a 4 Door STI Drive train in a 2door shell with Uk wagon wiring loom (rear wiper), differrent springs, special seats and enhanced knock sensing on a standard STI ECU (Yes that IS confirmed officially). A lot of money considering....

I DO have to admit though, I get less stares and admiration in the 8, than I did in my 2 door. Its just that much more unusual. STI8's are now very common.

Get a classic STi 6 (type r or 4-door if you sit on the motorway) you won't be disappointed. Recently got mine and they are simply stunning.

The classic is just that and I'd have one over the new age any day. Just my preference mind.
