Question Starting Advice on a MY98 Needed Pls.

Hi Guys, I think I know the answer already but I'm hoping to be proved wrong!

Lately when turning the key for ignition the starter motor is not catching, rather it makes a terrible grinding noise instead. It does eventually kick but the problem is becoming progressively worse. Even now when it catches I can hear a small, residual grind.

When it's running the car's sweet; it's been regularly seviced (although because of my lifestyle it's had a lot of short runs = lots of starts) and has only 57K miles on the board.

Is it possible that there are worn bearings / flywheel type gubbins inside the starter? If so will it require to be completely replaced and how much would I expect to pay for a new or reconditioned one?

TIA,

K.

Me neither, but a decent Auto electrics place will tell you.

They'll also take the old one off and test it for you.

Thumbs up

Thanks folk, usual SN good advice. Are these things normally repairable? I would just like to know before I go to the garage and they give the "Big Hmm!"

Starters can be rebuilt by a specialist starter place but thats generally only the electrical side of it.If the bendix is sh*g*d is gonna be a recon starter im afraid.

Question Another One, MY00 Classic This Time.

M8's Impreza has developed a loudish click / twang on the clutch at the top of it's travel. Unquote.

Difficult to say without seeing or hearing but I reckon adjustment or lubrication is required. The car is a minter with less than 20K on the clock.

Not a good weekend for Imprezas in this neck of the woods!

Thanks for replying.

Do you reckon nothing serious then?

Probably best not to answer that one!

Mine (MY98) has the dreaded judder which eventually goes away when warm or revved but I don't know this fault. I assume that the clutch is "self-adjusting"?

Ta,

The pedal 'click' is not serious, it's a spring on the actual pedal that's a sod to sort....

The clutch itself is indeed self adjusting....... some people recommend that if you have judder to simply give the car a damn good ragging, and do some drag type starts, never been that convinced myself..... but if you fancy it.. have a go!! Not advicing that you do though, thats just what others say...

Thumbs up Update : Nothing Interesting!

Touching wood as I type this but the starter motor seems to have had its hissy fit and is back to normal. Up until now I thought a "Bendix" was a washing machine brand, or is somebody pi$$-taking?

The car'll probably wait until I'm in the middle of nowhere with no signal for my mobile before it kicks it. Going to get it checked at the the next service (December) anyway.

I didn't do a Scooby search but a M8's Nissan's starter came in at £200 new. Ouch; Scrappy time!

My friend with the clutch problem has also sorted itself out.

As someone else already said "They all do that Sir!"

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Ken, if you have any further problems, pop down to my work in Alexandria. Be good to meet you, at long last.

PM me if you want details of where to go.

Wink

Ken: a sticking Bendix (no, they really ARE called that), can be intermittent, but is usually a sign that the starter is on it's way out.

Don't get too far from a phone signal, will you?
