IMPORT OR UK????
Hi again all, as you may know im looking for my first scooby (asking a lot of questions) and my new one is import or uk??
Im about to turn 25 in a month and can get insured on both then, But what id like to ask is, is it worth paying the extra insurance, prob fuel, etc for a WRX import or would i be better off with a uk spec???
If i bought an import would the ECU need altering for uk fuel???
What i really want to know is the WRX a lot better than a uk car to warrent the extra cash???
Im sure you can help
Thanks.

Are you talking Jap import or Euro. If Euro would defo say it's worth it. Bought a classic back in 99 from Holland, traded this for STi type UK from UK main dealer, in hindisght should have stuck with another Euro import, no major difference in service levels. If it is a JDM then can't comment as never owned one.

Id advise you to buy a nice late UK car considering your age. Youre going to need a replacement ECU to be safe with UK fuel (assuming that youre looking at a Classic) and seeing as itll be regarded as a modification, you might as well fit the same kit onto a UK car, pay less all round and still benefit from similar performance.

Im looking at a classic, I think they look better, plus my buget dosent streatch to a newer one. got quotes for both cars and im looking at around £950 comp for a uk or around the same fire and theft for a WRX?
Seen a few nice low mileage uks coming out of the woodwork now at resonable prices, But the WRX still take my fancy???
Think its down to more power
surpose ill just wait for the impreza that jumps out at me and then see which it is.
After all, from what i see its a buyers market at the min.
cheers guys.

Me personally would get a uk. The gearing on a JDM is very short, and the top end is crap. If yr after summat quick off the lights then a JDM is for you. If you want summat easy to drive and good for all round performance then get a uk. Just my lowly girly opinion

Sorry, dont agree with the previous post one little bit!
Yes imports have got shorter gearing, but they haven't got "crap" top ends, i can personally say a jdm wrx is able to do 140+ mph, they are very good all round easy to drive performance cars, they are not really any different to the uk cars, apart from gearbox and fuelling everything else is the same
The main issue against imports is fuelling, you can now get early (92-96)wrx ecu's mapped at scoobyclinic, about £575, which ain't that expensive in the long run.
steffiraf, i assume you haven't owned a jdm, just believe all the hype surrounding them!!

I'm also about to get another scooby. I originally wanted an import, more car for more money, stronger engine, that kinda thing. I would check out the insurance, i was shocked that a MY00 UK wagon was just over £400, a WRX same year, £550 and a STi £780. Yet i could get a MY03 STi UK for only £520. That changed my outlook, also the re-mapping for uk fuel, knocklink blah. Slightly unknown history. My opinion would be to get the right car for you. A good import comes along, then that's it, the money you save on an import compared to a UK equivalent will probably pay for the insurance difference anyway.
Having had an import sunny gti-r, never had a single problem with parts, insurance, servicing, nothing. This was in the old days when imports were frowned upon and always called "grey". Grey, pffff, it was black

Personally I would go with the "grey" Import, but that doesn't mean any old import will do. Most Japanese cars have very low milage and if it's been freshly imported will not have the usual problems that you find with some UK cars, i.e Rust. Lots of ropey cars on both sides of the water but the import would win each time for me as every Import subaru I have owned has been better spec'd and had more BHP than the equivilent UK model. Also never had any breakdowns or running probs with them.

The ideal scenario is one thats been imported from new and has a long service history and has been mapped for UK fuel. Anything else is a calculated gamble, the more previous owners and the less time in the UK the greater the gamble!
If you don't have money to throw at the car, you'd be better advised -from a financial safety standpoint- to find a good late classic UK car.

Hi Guys
just wanted to say that i recently brought a STi v2 import (obviously), i am very happy with it. had it a month now.
I am also 25 and paying just over £1000 through tescos, unfortunatly they need a tracker fitted so you need to budget for that.
One draw back (for some people) is that as it is a jap import it is restricted to 112 mph.

don't forget HID lights as standard, DCCD-A, foldy elec mirrors, twin-scroll turbo, equal length headers, uprated/stronger bottom end, 500 rev higher redline and the red dials in the dash that look the bo**ocks!
some of the above might have made it's way on to the '05 uk spec but not much

If it's your 1st scooby then why not take the safe option and by a UK Turbo. Take your time to learn how the car handles - do a few trackdays and REALLY learn how to drive the car. Then after a year or so look to upgrade to a better model (STI, etc).
If you buy a clean, low mileage UK car then at least you'll know the history better and you really need fully comp insurance.
There is plenty of time to progress onto higher power scoobs

personal cho1ce!!! but 1d say that uk 1s better because theyre:
cheaper to run (jap specs have to be remapped or run on optmax)
less hassle when you have to go to the man dealers for someth1ng
cheaper to 1nsure
have more transparrent servce h1story
1m 25 and faced the same decson as you just as soon as 1 turned 25, and 1 dont regret 1t. dont base your dec1s1on on performance, s1nce w1th the extra money you save on a uk, that can go on mods.

[most people I know have had their uk cars re-mapped anyway, cos they wanted more power !! Besides, Tesco are rolling out 99RON across the country]

[I would never take a car to a Subaru main dealer again, the last straw was them forgetting to reconnect the electric fans. Result - car boiled over **w&nkers**. Parts for imports are readily available from Xtreme, API, Scoobyclinic just to name a few]

[True if you dont modify them, but since you are advocating modifying then I doubt your modifed uk is much cheaper than an unmodified import]
have more transparrent servce h1story
[maybe, but a lot of imports (like mine) are now first registered here in the uk, so not necessarily relevant]

just got my malteste import wrx from motorpoint. was 15500+ tracker+ cat 1 alarm.
i'm well happy with it. if i could have stretched to a UK model then i would, cos of the free security + servicing, but hey maybe next time.
personally i'd quite like an australian STi import (they make can have auto gearboxes)

Get an import,Reset the ecu,and run on optimax. No probs.
Jap petrol is 99-102 ron.
Ecu will adjust for slightly lower ron of optimax which is 98ish.
The japanese generally look after their cars much beter than us british.
My legacy is a 1994 model.Looks as new everywhere, even underneath. All seals, boots, hoses, clips as new.Full extensive jap history.Car runs creamy smooth on optimax+1/2 bottle of millers octane plus. And good on optimax alone.Car had only done 28k when I bought it!
Use independant specialist for service.
They are much cheaper, and if you pick wisely will be more knowedgeable.
Source parts yourself, often much cheaper anyway.
Hope this helps.
Always remember
Jap import+Large bore exhaust+boost increase+supermarket fuel=melted pistons!!
Hope this helps

horses for courses - have had both - JDM's suit the real enthusiast, more extreme, less comfy, more course, make better tuning projects etc, UK cars are less extreme and course, more suited to our roads - depends what you want - 2 very different beasts. just my penny's worth. My wife hates my T20 - she thinks it will send her into premature labour - thinks she's probably right lol!
