Following Stef's review of the bump steer modifications to his car I took the plunge yesterday.

What a differnce.The steering seems to have greater feel and the response to the steering greatly improved.

The biggest improvement must be the the handling, it inspires greater confidence when cornering and has dialed out alot of the understeer.

Now can't wait till Brands to realy try it out.

Good, isn't it?!

After I had it done, I found the biggest improvement was how the car performed under extremes (e.g hard braking). Overall improvements in handling were good too.

They really know their stuff... one of the best mods you can do and good value too.

Matthew, we are coming over from the mainland with a few mates on 4/5 November, to have the bumpsteer thing done.

What interests me most is the steering under extreme braking ... with the Prodrive/Alcon kit, my front wheels seem to all wobbly, following a path of their own.

Given that they were carefully aligned, would that change at all with the bumpsteer mod ?

With the bumpsteer removal you will feel the car more stable under heavy braking.
For my car the change in toe under compression for the front was reduced to zero. The car now tracks incredibly sraight with no weaving under braking even on track. Trail braking however is another matter.

That's it! I'm going to call Powerstation tomorrow and get the car booked in! Having only owned rear wheel drive cars before the Scooby, I am finding the understeer very annoying - hopefully this will sort it.

Just two questions - Is the modification obvious and has anyone had any warranty problems after having the work done?

Hi...

Before the bump-steer removal, my car was very unstable during braking too. Since having it done, it is a massive improvement.

A non-bump-steer-removed car will have it's steering rack so that the geometry (front toe) at standstill will be different from the geometry when the suspension is compressed (i.e. braking - weight to the front, and cornering - one side of the suspension will be more compressed than the other). Hence, no matter what the geometry settings are, they will end up changing when the car is put in different situations. With bump-steer removal, there will be less (or no) change in the geometry. Not only will cornering be improved, but stability under braking will too.

You are coming a long way to have this mod done... you won't regret it!

I've not had the Powerstation treatment yet but have asked them if the change is easily noticable. They said that it would not be detected under normal servicing, there is probably less strain on the suspension components so unlikely to cause warranty work to be needed and the mod is reversible if you want. I will be getting it done as soon as I can on my MY99.

As a side issue I have found a large improvement in stability under braking and less understeer by changing tyre brand.

Straight-line braking is unbelieveably stable, you just have to be a bit more careful braking round bends as the car is slightly more prone to lift-off oversteer......which is ace!!!

£100+VAT and worth every penny... That is for bump-steer removal (steering rack shim), AND geometry settings.

Prodrive Geometry does make a huge difference, but it does not fully compensate for when the car is put under extremes (i.e. you will still get a variation in front toe). You can still have prodrive geometry (or indeed any other settings) with the bump-steer mod. Most just go for the Powerstation recommended settings though (not quite as extreme as prodrive, but doesn't need to be due to the bump-steer mod).

Now don't think about it... just do it!

Yeah, long way to go for an adjustment, but it just seems to be worth it.

On Sunday 5/11 we will go for a Wetter the Better course at Mira, so it does look like a fun trip.

Not fancying a trip all the way to powerstation, does anyone like micheldever or elite in essex do the prodive settings and the bump steer mod ?

I get significant movement under braking as well, so it sounds like this could be a possible answer - anyone tell me where they are located, a telephone number would also be welcome

This sounds like it is worth doing. Does anyone know if changing the geometry settings would affect tyre wear?

Bajie, they are not just up my bumper, they are on everyones bumper over here

't Is true though that the average Belgian driver slightly overestimates his braking power and reaction times ...

PS: you're lucky to have seen any Scoobs at all. Unofficial numbers seem to indicate a total of about 800 driving around in Belgium. Sales are a bit higher, but for an explanation of that see the "importing from the EU" threads ...
