Default Help with cooling system/heater

I have MY96WRX and noticed tonight that the heater fan was blowing out very cold when set to hot.
Later on i pulled into a garage,my wife popped in the shop for a minute or two,as i pulled away i noticed the temp gauge was almost to the top.
I quickly turned the heater on which this time blew out very hot and the guage went down to middle again.

I got home and sat with engine running and kept eye on guage it slowly started to rise and the cooling fan is not switching in.

Does this sound like dodgy thermostat?

Odd that blower was very cold 1 min then very hot the next, also when the temp gauge was almost at top and i switched fan on,the guage dropped in a blink of an eye as if it was an electrical fault.

Any one got any ideas at all.

Would much appreciate any help.

Note:
This is first time i have been out for a propper run in car since i fitted new clutch myself, cant think of anything i have done that could cause this though.

If the blower is cold you are very likely very low on coolant.

Either a leak (hose or rad) or worse, a blown head gasket.

Checked coolant and level is spot on,no muck in oil.
I am praying its not head gasket, the car runs perfect, dosn't miss a beat and pulls really well with no problems, noises, etc

Surely heater matrix would not cause the cooling fan to not come on??
