cossie owner looking for impreza
Hey all.
I currently own a 340bhp 4x4 saff cossie.
Ive had it for 2 years and loved every second of it. Ive now come to the time where i want something newer and different.
Last year at brunters she ran
4.2 to 60
10.9 to 100
standing qtr in 12.5 @110mph
Im slightly worried that the scoob wont feel as quick,
Im looking for a newer shape scoob WRX STI or possibly a P1.
I didnt come here for a scooby cossie battle i would just like some advise on the best impreza model for the money.

Neither a standard P1 or a standard new shape STi with quite get to 100 in 10.9, or make 110 terminal velocity on a standing quarter.
Close to 340bhp is fairly easily possible with the new shape STi with a full exhaust change and remap (less than £2k of modifications). However, that car is noticeably heavier than the P1 (and I think also heavier than the Cossie), so will probably still be a bit slower than your existing car in a straight line. If your cossie has standard chassis, I believe the scoob will corner faster, though.
Another option if you're after raw acceleration would be to get something llike an STi5 Type R or RA, which are japanese import, similar shape to the P1, but light and short geared so hence good acceleration. You might just pick one up and fit exhaust, injectors, new turbo (perhaps a TD05-20G), remap and supporting mods, 370bhp+ in a lightweight scoob for the sort of money you're talking; that certainly wouldn't feel slow!

Not sure if it's the sort of thing you're after but my W plate STI5 Type R is up for sale at the moment. In VGC and currently producing 320bhp from a Bob Rawle Tek3 remap, decat system and Induction kit. Just had service and cambelt done too, asking £11,495 ono.

Try and get a test drive in a Type RA WRC Ltd edition, they are bloody quick in standard form, also has a close ratio gearbox, one of the best Impreza's ive been in, does 0-60 in 4.5sec and a quarter mile in 12 seconds standard. seen a few go for around £10-£12k.

When i ran 12.5 twice at the strip there was a few sti's with ppp and some tuned even higher and they were getting 13's and 14's at just short of 100mph terminals

forget the version 8 sti...they come with less power as standard and in my opinion dont look anywhere near as good. As a former saph owner i am sure u appreciate what a car really looks like! AND the driving position in the classic is the best, never have i sat and felt so in control.

My recommendation is look at the newest JDM STi you can get, probably around 18k, though there was one on here for sale at 16k, thats your best starting point, remap should release a nice 350+bhp, 370ish lbs of torque.

I have to say I find it quite funny comparing a car from the early 90s with something modern day. I have owned both Escort and Sapphire Cosworth's and I have to say the Subaru is on a different planet both handling and performance wise. Way back then in comparison to other cars the cosworth was great. Today I don't think either Cosworth even comes close to the Subaru.
handlingwise the Subaru is awesome you can hardly say that of the Sapphire Cosworth whose handling was............scary.
Needless to say that you're making a good choice going for the Subaru in my opinion it's far better than the Mitsubishi from many angles.

Try getting a WRX STi Type-R Version 5 or 6 for that price. Rarer and much better than a P1.
Its a 2 door Jap import Scoob with all the toys, like DCCD and does 0-60 in 4 secs flat! Has 300bhp (sometimes abit more) as standard!

thanks for your replys guys. hopefully my mate will have sold his escort turbo soon and then he'll have the cos off of me.
I just wanted to do a bit of research before i bit the bullet, so it will probably be another month or so before im at the buying stage.
i did concider an evo but tbh the running costs, clutches, diff oil etc put me off.
i have a few friends with imprezas one of which is a terzo 3 of which i quite like, its not as quick as my saff but the handling and grip is amazing. Not to mention that sound!!!

12 seconds was probably a bit optimistic but was meant as 12.n never go round to changing it, does say around 12 seconds as well.
Saw a classic 300bhp wrx run a 12.9 so a type ra with 276bhp and shorter ratio is not going to be a million miles behind.
In any case mine is running 320bhp now

I have had many cars over the years, 3 door cossy, e39 m5, e46 m3, xkr, e39 alpina B10, SKYLINE R33 GTR Vspec, I only travel around 5 mins to work so have got a uk sti ppp, and must say its the most enjoyable car to drive, and agree with the previous posts that you really cant compare, its not all about speed, my Alpina was an extremly quick car and I rate it more than the M5, but twisted bends etc forget it the Sti would be gone. As for the Evo test drove several 8's just did not like the car at all.

I understand the old car new car theory completely. The cossie will just never be in the same ball park as a similar vehicle with modern build quality and technology.... thats really the whole point of getting the scoob.
I desperately wanted a 3 door cos next but if i want one, im gonna want a minter. That means i gotta spend at least 9K+. I just cant justify that money for a 20 year old car that im gonna worry about gettin rusty etc.
So that bought me to the impreza because its just such good value for money in terms of performance and the fact its a nearly new car.
But as you can imagine being used to a 4.2 0-60 time and mid 12 qtrs i dont wanna get in the scoob and think "damm this is slow!"
In all honesty i dont think that will be the case but would like advise all the same

The only mods are panelfilter,decat downpipe,freeflow exhaust and an ecutek remap to run on optimax.....
In terms of money only about £1500.00 on performance mods...

So after reading through some recent posts am i right it seems that a classic is a better buy than a bug eye?
I think im gonna be looking for a wrx sti bug eye. There no way id be able to insure a type r @ 22 so thats outta the question.
I wanted something newer with low miles hence wanting a bug eye, the blob eyes are still a little too dear in my opinion.
What do you guys think? Will i be happy with a standard wrx sti bug eye? idealy i want one with the big spoiler and the brembos. which model is this or were these just options?
