Default Thought I would try bp Ultimate :-(

Today I thought I would try just a few pounds worth of bp Ultimate in my 02 wrx sti...

Well I noticed a significant difference in power - its way down on Optimax... is this just my imagination ? anyone else care to comment...

I cant wait to get rid of this stuff now and get some Optimax back in.! on top of that ultimate is more expensive than optimax anyway..

Just thought i would see what the difference is like... I know I have only done 60 odd miles on ultimate but it feels well down on power without Optimax...

Never tried it in the Scooby, won’t either since I tried it in an early turbo Quattro that showed a dramatic decrease in power against Optimax. The Quattro ECU went into “driver is a muppet and has put diesel in the tank” mode

I haven't heard of that problem before. We've had everything from Tesco 95 ron through Ultimate/Optimax to Tesco 99 ron in our 02 WRX and there has never been that much difference in performance.

I think I'm right in saying BP Ultimate is 97 ron and Optimax is 98 ron. Perhaps thats where the difference is??

Cheers Barney.

At least you guys have the choice, BP Ultimate is one of the only SUL's you get in Northern Ireland. Shell do SUL as well but its not optimax. But last weekend when coming back for the boat filled up with optimax, car felt really good. Yesterday refilled with a tank of BP Ultimate and tbh it didnt feel any different.

Andy,

You wouldn't notice the difference after just one tankful. It takes a little while for the ecu to relearn and adjust. I have used ultimate in the past when I couldn't get anything else. My view is that at the time it was overpriced and overhyped.

I stopped using Optimax a while back and now use Sainsbury's super unleaded (shock horror). Guess what, in 18 fill ups I haven't noticed any difference in performance, compared to Optimax, but I have noticed a significant difference in my wallet

Not had the opportunity to try Tesco's 99 Ron fuel but again, I would only buy that if the price compared favourably with Sainsburys product and not for the alleged performance differences.

The ecu does its job of relearning, provided you don't fall outside the 97Ron minimum fuel grade recommended by the manufacturer. I guess that's why I haven't noticed any difference between the fuel types I have been using over the last 3 years.

My car didn't like the BP, seemed to be "panting" and missing a beat at idle.

you will if it's detting cos it'll pull the ignition right back. you're right in that you won't notice it getting back to normal after one tank of optimax though.

i've only ever used it once and that was cos i got stuck out in the sticks miles from civilisation and running water (lleyn peninsula) - i got bad det immediately and didn't rev it till i got a full optimax tank in there.

Could just be a bad tankful of ultimate (you could get that with any petrol). Personally, I'll stick with Optimax though.

Question Urban Myth

Don't be tricked in to thinking it all depends on where you get your petrol, yes BP ultimate is 97, Optimax is 98, and Tesco is 99. The thing is, i've been told it still all comes from the same refinery, it's just different in octane, makes sense theres one 5mins from where i live and all brands of fuel lorries come and go.
I was having this argument with my mum's fella that i would always trust Shell and BP over Tesco, after all, Fuel is Shell and BP's main line of business, where as Tesco's is groceries [Is that spelt correct?].
At this point he knocked me down to size with the reverlation of his work history, he used to work at one, and it's all the same whoever's selling it.
So after accepting i was wrong i don't really care where i get the Petrol, i just want the highest octane level available and at the moment thats Tesco.

BP Ultimate is basically ordinary superunleaded - makes me sick that BP call it 'ultimate' - marketing campaign that works if you has 2 brain cells

BP is min 97 Ron 88 Mon
Shell is min 98.6 Ron 88 Mon
Tesco is min 99 Ron 88 Mon

Wish I could get hold of some of the Tesco stuff........ just waiting for VMax that I see all over Europe at 100 Ron........
Then I could save on NF Booster bottles.........

MY02 STI, and no, its not detting. I have never run fuel at a rating below the recommended 97RON. I do know someone who runs his 02STI on 95RON, but that's between him and his conscience!

As I said, 3 years running on different brands and RONs and never noticed the difference. The ecu on the modern cars is seriously underrated in terms of its ability to protect the engine and adjust and learn.

I use the tesco 99 stuff all the time. When ive had to use Optimax the consumption goes through the roof?, using the tesco stuff is not to bad. My car is totally standard though, and my wife appreciates the points

My knocklink doesnt like BP Ultimate, I would never buy that stuff again.
Optimax, Tesco 99 and Esso Super give very little activity however, all good petrol!

The car will have almost imediately retarded ignition, BP Ultimate is the wirst SUYL available imho, definately to be avoided as I tell everyone who comes for remapping, Optimax then Esso is probably the best sequence, the 99 Tesco should be ok as well of course.
