Well, suppose I might as well say it before someone else does...
If you're considering a P1, what about an STi Type R (V5/V6)? Better spec than the P1 and there's plenty for sale at the moment at great prices.
However, if it was a choice between the two (P1 or BugSTi), I would probably go for the P1 as its a 2 door and they really do look the best. But I might be tempted to at least have a look at something like This
Out of the three though, Type R everytime

I have a V5 Type R and do 120 mile daily commute. I must admit I was a bit aprehensive but after a while (honestly a week or so), you really don't notice the gearing.
As for fuel consumption, on an average motorway run, it really isnt much different to my UK scoob that I had.
The insurance isnt that bad compared to say a P1 or a V7 STi I wouldnt imagine.

To me, the 7 is less in your face than an 8 and doesnt have the dodgy image of the classic shape (due to chavs)
If you go import then you get the adjustable diff ect, which the P1 hasnt got. The P1 will hold its value a little better, but you can pick up an 02 STi for about £12k which is a bargain. TEK3 and a zorst etc and you have a very capable car.

Thought I'd throw my two pennies worth into this discussion having just sold my STI 7 PPP ....in favour of a V5 Type R
1) the 7 is ugly & it took me over 6 months to get rid of it.
2) The Type R (& the P1) seem to be holding their value while the 7 has just plumetted in value.
3) Even with the PPP I found the acceleration disappointing with the 7, didn't seem any faster than my old UK 97 with a few minor exhaust/air filter mods.
4) Reason for 3 above is I think the weight, IIRC over 150 kgs heavier than a classic, you can feel it even in the doors.Ok if you like that quality "feel", not good for performance.
5) Plus points of the 7 :a) The most comfortable seats I've ever sat in
b) Fantastic on the motorway
c) Built to be tough as old boots
d) Brembo brakes (though this limits wheel choice)
Sorry I have no experience of the P1 but I would say try before you buy!
Maybe better to get a really nice low mileage one (unless you want to trackday it)
So far my Type r has consumed one gearbox, one clutch, & 2 sets of anti roll bar links but I deliberately bought a cheaper example as i knew I would treat it hard.Still love it like a long lost billionaire brother
Despite doing an extremely hard track instruction day the 7 broke...nothing!
Cheers, John

owning a classic STi and going in both the P1 and the V7 id much rather have the P1. Neva had the chance to go in an R but for me its the P1 everytime.
But i just love the classic shape... so its gona win it for me everytime. Must say new shape is slowly growing on me tho.

P1 for sale
If you decide on a P1, let me know, my mate 's got a [i think] X reg, standard car with 26k on the clock, he's of to Oz at the end of the year for ever, i think he wants £17k, it's based in the Tring area of Hertfordshire.
I've got a Type R, and to be honest theres FA between the two really, After all the P1's a softer uk version of the Type R.

Jay - thats about the size of it! AWD for winter I never keep things long but this car is so much nicer to drive than a scoob, it really is an amazing piece of engineering. its quick too, but I think turbo cars are in the blood
Ive had a V5 STi and modded they are extremely quick, certainly too quick for the standard brakes etc! I loved it and it looked but there are a lot of idiots driving them round my way and you tend to get branded with them If that bothers you!
I still think the 7 is worth a look, cheap as chips - and spend the change making it into a beast.

We were in the same boat as you m8, coming from a classic WRX really wanted a P1. But then a 02 STI 7 Prodrive ppp came up for sale(on here) with better spec more power and newer, also was cheaper to insure and had 4 doors which we were used to and ideal family car. TBH the P1 looked dated next to the new age cars and the build quality is far better(imho). Had the car coming up to 2 years now, and not a thing has gone wrong. Never regreted buying the 7 instead of the P1, but really it's up to the individual, the thing that made it clear to us that we'd got the right car was in winter when it snows bad, the 7 had no issues clearing the rutts of snow on the roads but the P1 would have grounded in the 1st 2 feet from the house. What we did was make a pros and cons of each car and jot down your needs etc, and also it's worth while getting the insurance quotes as well, the P1 was £1200 garaged ONLY, no drive/road, the STI7 £830 garage/drive/road.
Personally I love the look of the car, especially in black(our colour) prefer it to the blob eyes which are to thin and high at the front, and the seats are crap in the 8s compared to the 7s, they just don't hug enough .
The sevens price has dropped due to the ever changing face and prices of the next gen scoobs coming out, same thing has happened with the Evos. The reason the P1 keeps it's price is it's a special, same goes for the 555 STI ra vltd/typeR vltd, S202/S203, WR1 it's a special, so the residuals are going to be better.
Hope you get what you're looking for, there are some very good priced sevens out there.

Definately the newage STi, its as quick with the PPP, its got a nice dollop of torque in the midrange, the 6 Speed is much nicer than the 5 speed, the brakes actually stop you the interior doesnt rattle and the plastics dont look anywhere near as cheap, and you get a decent a/c system rather than just an on/off button, plus the practicallity of 4 doors, but you really need to test drive both if your in a predicament.
