Time to leave
#1
Looks as though it's time for me to leave this BBS.
I've never had a Subaru, but I've loved reading about them and the modifications people make to them. I honestly thought that I’d meet a bunch of like-minded people on this board.
Instead, there seems to be a (growing) minority of spiteful, petulant, and thoroughly self-obsessed whingers who seem to think that the world is against them.
In almost all debates (and the original subject is almost irrelevant), several views are propounded
1 The police are castigated for not catching burglars, when they instead insist on nicking some poor defenceless Scooby driver whose only crime was driving well in excess of the speed limit in a very distinctive car.
2 Kill all burglars, or at the very least chop their hands off. That’ll learn ‘em.
3 The government are all fat cats who are ripping us off.
4 Insurance companies are ripping us off. (Er, they’re just trying to make a living – look at the claims made and you’ll see why it’s not cheap to insure a Scoob.)
5 IM are ripping us off.
6 Petrol companies are ripping us off.
7 BMW drivers are all stupid, but we Scooby drivers are all really good.
8 Big spoilers are really good and look deal cool on a Scoob, but tragic on a Nova.
9 Europe … don’t want that nasty Euro, oh no.
I was hoping that when Scoobynet 1 ceased to exist, a slightly more mature attitude might prevail, but having read the hysterical ranting on this BBS over the last few days re fuel, I’ve realised how far out of step I am with the other BBS subscribers.
To be honest, I don’t have any desire to own an Impreza any more. Nothing wrong with the car, it’s just the other owners that put me off.

OK
I want to be careful here about using the webmaster (official) account for this comment but..
NickF
This forum is for a section of society. That section happens to be people who are interested in / own / drive subarus.
This does not mean that the board is solely for discussion of a certain subject. It is for discussion of anything that the community wants to discuss.
If you go to the pub do you listen to everyones conversation there and then decide whether you stay there depending on whether you agree with some of the things that are said?
Some people find the discussions you have slated very important, informative and enjoyable.
Threads like this one appear every now and then and the same things are said.
You are more than welcome to post / read this board as often and whenever you like. As long as it is not illegal, you can also discuss pretty much whatever you like.
Please afford the rest of us the same courtessy.
Yours Respectfully

Nick F,
Get off your throne/high horse and lighten up! Goodness gracious me!
I am surprised that many BBS posters have not had cheek repair operations due to the tongue in cheek nature of a huge amount of posting!

Nick F,
Please don't tar us all with the same brush. Most Scooby Owners (IMO) are unlike your description. On the other hand, a difference of opinion can make for a more lively discussion. Why not stay and promote your views.

Ps Nick, drive one and you'll buy one.

Quite a few of these posts are turning into real heated debates with quite a few people showing alot of anger. Is it because of the fuel crisis and they are not getting out to play with there toys and burn off some of that frustration?
An idea to look at is take it from a different approach.. and just completely chill, and instead of getting hot headed and make irrational decisions just be friendly.
Nick , why leave? Is there any point in it? You surely have had read quite a few posts that have made you chuckle with laughter - i know i have.

I think you've made the right decision. If you disagree with other people voicing their opinions - then this board will continue to antagonise you.
I guess it would be easier if we all shared the correct opinion on all matters - ie you're own. Shame.
Goodbye
ps I am interested in why you thought your moan (this post) was worth having yet other peoples (eg petrol companies ripping us off) are not ?

I would hate you to leave with that impression. The vast majority of people on this board share a common interest - cars. However if you goto any BBS with a general section you will find all kinds of comments (look at 22B or the RS board in the States (especially if you want political commentary!)).
Since I've been on this board, the questions I have asked have always been answered without snide remarks (and people seem remarkably tolerent of newbies asking the same old questions ).
I would also add that as a direct result of this board, I have met several people whom I regard as good friends.
People are entitled to post up their views, the law of averages says that you won't agree with all of them. I think it is a little unfair to tar everyone with the same brush.
Anyway, no hard feelings, please feel free to come back anytime.

As you so rightly say, everyone has a right to an opinion.
Mine is that the signal:noise ratio on the BBS has declined over the last few months, and I'm exercising my option to keep away.
Rather than just slinking off, never to be seen again, I thought it only fair to point out exactly what it was about the current Scoobynet 2 content that I found so offensive. It's not the comments, it's the fact that the same old half-facts seem to get trotted out in virtually every thread.
Just to follow up on your pub analogy, if I went to The Car Enthusiast's Arms expecting (not unreasonably) to chat about cars, but instead heard incredibly ill-informed pseudo-political posturing (sorry about the unintentional tautology), I'd check that I was really in the right place, then leave.
Good luck with Scoobynet 2 - I hope you can make it pay its way.

I'm so fed up with the rip off merchants in big spoilered BMW's nicking all our petrol and driving badly. They should have their appendages cut off and go to mainland Europe!
Couldn't resist!

It's like everything else in society - there are a bunch of people with differing views. It would be pretty boring if everyone had the same view.
You're bound to read stuff that you disagree with a fair amount, are angry with every so often and really offends you once in a while. This is what will always occur when people are allowed to say what they want. Hopefully you will read things that you agree with more often than ones that you disagree with.
You said that the people who offended and angered you were the minority (albeit growing). If everyone who disagrees with something that they read on the BBS left there would be nobody left pretty soon.
If someone says somthing that you disagree with and you choose to not discuss it with them then just ignore it. There are loads of people out there with differing views to everyone, and just because they have differing views (and some others agree with them) doesn't mean that they are all spiteful, nasty pieces of work.
People often post things which are on their mind at the time. If someone gets a speeding ticket or a parking fine and is angry he/she might unload on the BBS and have a whinge about how unfair it all is. This does not have to be a true representation of what their character is like - just at the moment they wrote the posting they were annoyed about whatever. Nobody here really believes some of the things that you maintain people think about killing thieves etc.
Life is too short to get wound up about something as small as people with differing views.
Chill out. We're not all "spiteful, petulant, and thoroughly self-obsessed whingers who seem to think that the world is against them." as you put it.
BTW in any debate the initial topic can be strayed from. If people want to talk about something they will. That's what makes it so good to read some of the postings - you see what others are thinking, have a rant, give a commiseration, help someone out if you can, etc.
As Mossman said a lot of what is posted here is tongue in cheek and some is designed to provoke a response. If people whinging to each other cheers them up then why not. As long as people don't stop others from discussing what they want and as long as people can always discuss whatever they want with others with similar opinions the BBS is performing its function.
There are plenty of people on the BBS with BMWs as well as Scoobies, just as there are plenty of Volvo owners and Jeep type 4WD owners. People slate them for fun - it is not meant to be offensive but just some light relief.
One last thing - why would the owners of a car put you off getting it. If you don't get a Scooby just because of something that you read on this BBS then you'll be losing out for no real reason at all. As g4vln said - if you do drive one you'll be hooked.
You'll find that most people on the BBS are reasonable and decent. If everyone was like the 'minority' you refer to, then you would have been flamed left, right and cetre for this posting. The fact that so many people are trying to get you to 'chill out' should show you that you might be over-reacting.
This is all IMHO so flame away if it makes you feel better.

Mossman - outstanding last post!!
NickF - this is what ScoobyNet is all about in my opinion - fun, help, talk.
If you're going to leave the BBS good luck. I fear you'll find many BBSs not as understanding as this one.

Final posting - honest.
I'm thoroughly chilled, though thank you to those of you who are obviously concerned about my blood pressure.
Most of you are entirely reasonable people - remember that I only mentioned a minority - and I've enjoyed the postings, even the pointless ones (to me)such as '911-vs-Impreza, which one will win'
It's not a heated debate which offends me but lack of intelligence in that debate. Lazy views like "they're just ripping us off" which aren't substantiated by anything other than a general unhappiness at the cost of running a high-performance car do not, in my opinion, add much to anyone's knowledge.
Anyway, it's mainly been fun, but now it's time to go.

So Nick...
You are telling me that you would walk round the pub checking what everyone was talking about, and if anyone expressed an opinion (however ill-informed) that didn't match yours, you would leave?
My advice would be this. Don't read threads that you are not interested in. Do you feel that you must read everything on here?
If people are posting things which you know are wrong, enlighten them! Surely leaving is a tad over the top.
"...it was about the current Scoobynet 2 content that I found so offensive. It's not the comments, it's the fact that the same old half-facts seem to get trotted out in virtually every thread..."
"so offensive" ?? really?
"virtually every thread" ???
Whatever you decide to do, I'm sure you will always be welcome here, the same as everyone else, no matter what their oppinions are.
I wish you all the best.
Regards
Simon

One of the things, (apart from the excellent Scoob info.) that I've come to enjoy about this BBS is the real sense of community.
IMHO what's good about this BBS IS the varying opinions and lively discussions along with a good dose of humour as long as it's relevant to Subaru/performance car driving/ownership.
Logging on to this BBS, I'd rather read someones rant about car vandalism, price of fuel or rising insurance costs than read a level headed, well constructed discussion on, say, what's the best digital camera on the market.
My point is that topics such as car vandalism, price of fuel etc etc ARE relevant to owning a Subaru Impreza. These are issues that affect me and no doubt most other members of this BBS and therefore they are discussions worth reading and contributing to.
To suggest that we are all Impreza elitist is unfair.
I, for one, do not think that BMW drivers are stupid. If I DO think that a big spoiler on a Nova is tragic, well that's my opinion and I'm entitled to it.
Just because you don't agree with some of the opinions raised on the BBS, doesn't mean you can't add your own points.
I hope you change your mind about leaving...
Rich
P.S. I've found your teddy bear - do you want it back?
EDIT:-
um, I see you've already left. Oh well..

People should just come and go as they please I don't think there is any need for the bold "I'm leaving catch my teddy as it exits the pram" type posts! Have a good weekend everybody.

Comrade Nick F is correct. This freedom of expression does not comply with the socialist ideal. All dissenters have been noted and will be visited for re-education shortly.
In addition to this, Vodka rations have been cut.

I really take offence at a comment like that. I've been to several Midlands mini meets and get along to the track days at Donnington as often as possible. The folks I've met are all top people - very friendly, happy to give rides in their car and up for a laugh.
I for one don't want to meet somebody with such a holier-than-thou attitude like you, so thanks for coming.
Chris.
