got mine set at 6k, so i know that if it bleeps midcorner i dont have to chnage straight away. I dont take it to the rev limit a) for engine life and b) no need with peak power at 6k

It will depend on what your cars spec is. Not much point in people giving you random RPM shift points that wont apply to yours.

Pete, I have to agree. If you dont know when to change gear, you shouldn't own a car. Also, if you have to look at a shift light - you could just as easily look at the speedo.

Complete waste of time.

If I had one I would consider it an insult to my driving skill ......................

I would disconnect it ......... I simply don't need these things to make me feel special!!

Whats next?? A light to tell you when to brake?? Probably a good idea as your eyes are always off the road looking at CockLinks and suchlike!!

Where have all the real men gone??

Nivea wearing bloody ponces!!

So then, Mr. CockLink, why do the WRC drivers have an indicator telling them exactly what gear they are in? Don't tell me that's for the TV viewers.

Mate, you are such an ***... you trip yourself up in so many of your threads.

The point is that you don't have to LOOK at the light to see it. That's the real point. It acts as a peripheral sensory indicator so your brain translates it as either on or off without taking your eyes off the road. Whereas you HAVE to look at a speedo to interprete the revs, hence taking you eyes off the road.

Guess you would only realise this if you had one.

I agree with Pete, I don't need a light to tell me when to change gear.

My gear changes are always spot-on, my gear changes are always fast, my gear changes are always smooth.

Is there an actual point to a shift light on a road car.,...am I missing something. Is it related to having a tuned set up (boost control?) if not surely it serves only a cosmetic purpose?

btw i think it would rather put me off flashing on and off. Id rather concentrate on my driving than deal with a light.

Plus i think having such a light is just like having an automatic car, ud feel dictated into how to drive ure car

you could ask " is there any point to a big spoiler on a road car" all the way to "is there any point on having a car which can go more than 70mph (UK)".
We buy the cars we buy cus that's what we want.
I got a WRX SL cus it's got leather. My choice!

Maybe ...... but look at what the thread is asking ..... 'at what RPM do you set your likkle light to come on?'

FFS you can choose what RPM to set it - just as I do in my mind in a fraction of a milisecond!!

Its like the CockLink - you can adjust it so you don't get a red light!! WTF??

Both about as much use as a one legged man in an **** kicking contest!!

I can't believe people are serious on this - must be

F1 cars etc need them because you drive them to the limiter, and the speed the revs shoot up is extremely quick - in which case a peripheral light is very useful.

A scoob never needs to be redlined IMO, its not how to get the best out of the car - even a remapped one tails off at the top end. For that reason, you shouldn't be hitting the limiter - and it doesn't come round that quick anyway so a light is pointelss unless you really dont know the car.

My driving must be suffering without one though - best get shopping

Dont NEED one it just happens the car came fitted with one,Not my choice,It has to be set to some sort of rpm so i told the chap where mine was set at.Saying that it rarely flashes as i rarely get the revs that high.

Sorry to but in on the thread. In all seriousness - there are one or two slight differences between a WRC car and yours. I don't know if they need to be spelt out but as an example - travelling sideways at 100mph on a loose surface, co-driver bellowing instructions, stones and twigs firing off the arches like bullets and the minor issue of a sequential box (the stick is in the same position no matter which gear your in) all help justify a shift light and indicator on a WRC.

All though I'm not that bothered what people spend their hard-earned on, I can't see the value of a shift-light in a street car. The position of the gear stick, engine tone and power delivery tell me everything I need to know without taking my eyes off the road. How an earth a little red light telling you to change gear can offer any benefit at all is beyond me.

As always, happy to be corrected.

Pete, it's other cars that have the lights that tell you when to brake.

IMO there is nothing 'chav' or pointless about shift-lights. Its just a drivers aid, to indicate the best time to shift gear (if set up right).

If you dont need or want one that is your choice. Dont shoot the poor guy down in flames for a simple question.

Too many people on SN hear one person say BAH and they all follow

Dont see them on Evo's or Skylines.

Think what we are saying is that in response to the posters question, you don't need it.

Pointless.
