DrD,

When the light comes on you've got about 10 litres left (couple of gallons) so depending on how you drive at most 60 miles.

Never managed more than 40 miles once light comes on.
Tried once and run out 100 yards from home after taking babysitter home.

Other half not amused.

Don't think my other half would be amused either if my "babysitter" lived 20 miles away!

Mmmm. I also end up with around 10 litres when the light glows. Should be able to get more than 40 miles out of that provided you exercise some right-foot restraint!

I don't know - these young people.

I've always been able to tell when I'm REALLY running low on fuel (ie after 40 miles of driving with the low fuel light on)...

When you go round a corner with your foot to the floor and the turbo demands lots of fuel you get fuel cut outs (like a rev limiter). Just don't be near the limit of grip when this happens!

Once after this happened I drove about another 10 miles and found the cut out happened when accelerating in a straight line -- this is when I dived in for fuel and could still only get 57 litres in the tank.

So don't go flying round bends at full pelt when you're pretty low on fuel or you may end up swapping ends.

Strong,

I did that with a 306GTI. And it needed a new shell, oops. Luckily it was on a test drive so it was only the garage that lost out.

Oh and it case your wondering, I bought a Scooby instead for the safety of AWD
