It's not me thats lookin at the car.. he just wants to find out as much info about the car before he buys it.. fuel was one of the qestions.. he has a company car any so it would only be a weekend car.. are there any common faults with the type R's or are they a solid car like the ordinary turbo
Thanks

Depends on how the car has been maintained -
is it a fresh import or been in the country a while...? Check the service history (most probably receipts/bills for any work done)
be sure its been ran on quality fuel/oil - has it had an ecu remap for uk fuel..?is the engine standard/modified etc etc... take it for a spin, make sure it pulls like a train quick acceleration - smooth throughout the rev range - should have no hesitation etc etc...
Also quite a few have suffered big end failure (knackered engines) so buy one thats been rebuilt properly

Raf.
any specific info drop me a PM

As everyone has said if you have to question fuel consumption don't buy one ,I also use mine only at the weekend, if going to a meet like the NBO because we are quit central its a full tank of optimax around £48 getting only 240 miles but it's the pleasure of ownership and driving experiance i wouldn't part with my baby for the world,i have owned my type r now for little over a year she has had 3 services in that time costing around £185-£250 each time so good maintenance is a must and they won't let you down, cambelts fitted are around £200 get it checked and replaced if on a fresh import for peace of mind.remaps can cost around £600 (always use optimax no other fuel will do i have been caught short and used (normal fuel)and noticed the difference immediatly, apart from that fantastic car best impreza ever made !

For a V4 STi you would need a different ECU for it to be remapped to, you can safely run a V4 STi of any type if you use super unleaded/optimax and octane booster, and with the added aide of a Knocklink to show you whats happening under the bonnet.

fuel wouldn't be a big thing cause he'd only be using it the weekend... just something he wanted to know.. he's had other turbo cars so he's well used of petrol stations.

Find out what model it is? 97 normally means a version3, which the same exterior as the 98 cars, but the earlier interior from the 94-96/97 cars.

The 98 Onward cars had a digital trip meter and the same dash until 2000, when the new shape came out.
Apart from a revised engine/management, the only other interior differeence was the steering wheel design.

It's worth buying a V4 as for a few quid, you can facelift it externally to look like a 2000my car.
