Have a read of these:

It seems that any tint added to the front side windows now exceeds the legal limit.

Having said that, I've just managed to get Privilege to add my tints to my insurance schedule. I sent them a fax telling them of all the mods I had, and all they came back to query was the level of tint at the front. I told them honestly that the fronts were tinted 23%, which when added to the OE tint reduces the light allowed through to below 70%. Really expected them to ask me to remove the front tints even though they've been fitted since 2002.

Was presently surprised to receive an updated schedule which included my suspension, exhaust, tek 3, and tints on . Not sure how I got away with that, other than stressing that the 23% was a light tint.

was told that it is illegal to add tints to front windows to take below 70%. as subaru add a tint as standard to windows, even if the lightest tinting film is added it would be outside of this. just had my rears done and that looks good, excellent job too, courtesy of tintz uk at lincoln

The standard tint on the factory glass is legal, anything more than that on fronts is not.
Therefore if you are lucky enough to have clear glass on your motor you can tint to a legal yet very low %, but if your glass is tinted already any more additions however light takes you beyond the legal limit.
