Default Whining noise at 68mph

hello. i have an 04wrx and when driving at around 68mph the car makes a whining noise. it is consistant with road speed, not engine speed as it makes the noise whatever gear you are in at around 68mph.

anyone got any ideas or encountered this same problem?

-------- its wishing it was an STi !! -------------

err, or it could be the window seals - in the STi they give out around 130 -- sort of reverb droning - quite high frequency - at first i thought it was a bit like one of those inflight announcement 'bongs'

have you established if its the wind type noise or mechanical or can't you tell?

Some things to try - to help someone diagnose the problem:

  • is it louder with windows open?
  • try hitting the brake pedal at 68, does this effect the noise?
  • press down the clutch pedal at 69, then do you hear anything?

Bah, beat me to it , the whining noise from the passenger seat area in my car starts as soon as the loud pedal is pushed.

the noise is only at 68mph. if you slow down or speed up as little as 1mph either side the noise dissappears completely!

Search the BBS, there's loads of posts on this subject.

My 04 does it too, but I don't spend a lot of time at 68mph so don't hear it much.

A Subaru "Feature"... just like the juddering clutch on the classic!

Push the door mirrors in, If a small sticker is present remove, as this can cause noise at speed, worth a look.
