hi mate
i had the same prob about 8 mths ago, crank decided it wanted out for no apparent reason, cause unknown, cost about 3.5k, thats a brand new block from subaru and reputable subaru specialist to fit it, plus all head work. then 2000 miles into new engine(run in as instructed to the letter) and that one decides to let go as well. (bummer hey)

Sounds like a head gasket. when the Check Engine light comes up the car will go into safety mode and only boost to like 4.5rpm More likely to be where the oil has been over filled and where the header tank is chucking out the water mixed with oil.
Check the water level when this happens.... is there water in pipes to the rad etc.....
Get the scoob sniffed as well.... then u know if it is head gasket or not...

I'm really sorry this has happened to you, but based on your description, it's most likely that a rod has punched the hole in the block.
This could be caused by a piston seizing, a big end going, and the rod seizing on the crank, or a rod bolt snapping. any one of these, plus a few other things could cause this.
Unfortunately, at the very least, it will need a new short engine, with luck the heads will be ok.
Mark.

Thats really bad news ............. I would be interested in seeing the pictures!
As an aside, why do people think it strange that running an engine at 320BHP and 5500RPM results in a destroyed engine? - I'm certainly NOT having a pop at you in your hour of need, you have only had the car a short while ......... but I am confused as to why its all so shocking to people on ScoobyNet (they are, after all, petrolheads - so should know better?)
Good luck with the diagnosis, I hope its just a blown head gasket - but if it is a hole then thats it I think.
Pete

End result would be a fabulous car, although not the first of its type
good luck

Subaru design this engine to deliver 215BHP in standard form - increasing that by more than 50% is asking for trouble .................... hardly talking crap!?
I mean a UK STi with PPP throws out 300BHP, but its a Subaru/Prodrive designed power increase ..............
And I stand by my shock that petrolheads on here complain when engines blow-up ............. when they are stressed beyond their capabilities
Maybe I'm just really clever and smart and can understand the mechanics of machines better than your average ScoobyNetter????

Don't forget, the guy has an RA so it's got STi internals which should, if it's all in good condition, have no problem with 320 bhp, assuming of course that this power was achieved in this country with a map suitable for our fuel? Maybe before anything else, he should investigate where and how the power was achieved?

hi guys the car was bought from someone on this site and had been mapped bye scooby clinic to run uk fuel rr at 316 bhp
Modifications:
Pace Front Mount intercooler inc. uprated Rad.
ScoobyECU (mapped for uk fuel)
2 bar map sensor
Blitz Nur Spec R exhaust
Magnex decat downpipe
P1 suspension
K&N inducton kit (with cold air feed/box)
Uprated Clutch
as to the car been taken to 5.5k revs its not like the car was drove non stop on the limit ive drove it maybe 5 times since i bought it and i havent drove it to what i would consider its limits once. This was a simple overtakeing manouver wich any car should be capable off never mind a subaru to say the least im am disapointed i dont have 3k laying around as ive only just forked out 6.5k for the car im going to look into a diy job if posable and i can find enough decent info ..tony

Tony,
Speak with the guys at Prosport (0161 432 9999) and see what they can do, though it sounds like a full rebuild to me
Out of curiosity, what fuel have you been running the car on? plus when was the car last serviced?

Hmmmm do you know who serviced the car?
Things unfortunately dont go for no reason
What i will say though, is when shes back up and running go down to Jap Innovations (oldham) and buy a knocklink and sensor from them, its a bit of a must on a JDM import, remap or not ( www.jap-innovations.co.uk )
But see what Prosport can do for you first

What I can find out is this statement:-
"The WRX Type-RA competition base model is designed for entry in motor sport. With an intercooler water spray and close ratio transmission gearbox, horsepower is at 240PS/6000rpm and torque at 31.0Kg-m/5000rpm (WRX & WRX Type-RA)"
That would be a NO on your behalf then to my question? I can find NOWHERE a record of FHI launching an Impreza 2.0Litre Turbo with more than 300BHP - you MUST ask yourself why?? Maybe, just maybe, the engines cannot take that amount of power?? Just a wild guess!
The car was designed to run at 240PS @ 6000RPM ...... this car was pushing out 320BHP @ I assume, 6000RPM??
Sorry, but my point remains valid ............. taking the power UP by about 35% is not going to result in anything but a destroyed engine, period.
Pete
ps. this has nothing to do with Tonydry's predicament, just a general observation that you mod your cars at serious risk!!

Prosport is in stockport, just off the junction west juntion of the M60 (pyrimid), follow for didsbury, you want to turn off at station road which is about 2-3 miles up there, or you can look for them on the subaru uk website, they are an authorised subaru uk service centre as well as servicing JDM cars like mine
Jap innovations is pretty easy to find, you can either go passed the Broad Oak pub and out towards oldham that way (find its the easiest but cant remember the name of the road ) or you can drive into oldham, hit the big roundabout, turn right to the juntion before ashton road, down through the first set of lights, over the bumps, hit another set of lights, turn left there, and its near the next main junction, you turn left, by the post office sorting office.

Lees road, go that way (thought of it now ) you just follow that into oldham, first set of lights you turn right (there is a right hand lane and some shops, straight on takes you to the big roundabout) then as i put before

Just a thought,
When you took it up to 5.5k revs to overtake how many miles had you been driving it? You would be suprised how long the oil takes to get up to operating temperature. Mine takes at least 5 miles.
