Question Re-Mapping Question?

When some of you get your ECU Re-Mapped to use a different petrol, say.

How do you know that ANYTHING has been done??

I could set up a re-Mapping Service ..... swap-out ECU's and charge £250 a time and do absolutely NOTHING!

You would never know, you would be happily using the different petrol and, of course, everything runs fine.

I would be £250 richer and you would have a nice warm feeling - I reckon thats a fair exchange.

Bulk buy on a Lewis Re-Mapped ECU anyone???

I'm also going to start up a company called Lewis Rally Racing (LLR) - I will be buying Gallons of Synthetic Oil from Halfords at a negotiated low price and pouring it into LewisRallyRacing Containers and selling for £69:99 for 5Litres.

You will ALL buy the Oil, its expensive enough to give you another warm feeling, I will even start a Myth on Scoobynet about its amazing qualities - its abilities to fix failing MAF Sensors, maybe??

It's LRR - not LLR

I think someone is already doing the MAF thing on ebay.

I get what you're saying, and there are a minority who let the whole industry down.

What has sparked this outburst anyway?

They even disconnect the CamShaft Sensor and take the spark plugs out after an Oil Change to turn the Engine over

Stick around, theres plenty more **** stuff about!

Thanks Bob

But, the question still remains ................. how can ANYBODY tell whether they have actually had a re-map carried out?? It could all be a complete fantasy!

And there's good money to be made preying on the stupid fears that can be induced in 'some' people, the simple souls of this world!

I'm no expert but I reckon you would be able tell as you would see less activity on the knocklink than before.

I think you could also tell from just driving the car(smoother power delivery, more power/torque) Or higher boost levels if you have a gauge. I've had two different scoobs re-mapped and trust me you would feel the difference if done right.

Pete,

Unless you are aware of the process and involved and thereby able to oversee the mapping (in which case do it your self?) I'd say it boils down to trust and some level of self education. Some people will abuse it and some won't. Trouble is if we decide as a default to trust no one,.....

Good question: You still want that Prodrive Performance Pack on your new wagon!?!?!?! It may be free, but the insurance company will think you've joined the **** club and up your premium!!

You silly bugger, course you'll know if they've done something to the car...........................right at the point when your engine goes bang!

Just kidding!

Well, come on, it IS a CockLink

It's just a bunch of gay lights to make the simple a bit happier about their engines, it turns the voltage from a knock sensor into a series of 'pretty' lights! A SUBARU fitted knock sensor sends the SAME signal to the ECU and this adjusts at thousands of times a second ..................

It's all done to scare you wittless ...............

After a remap, the car feels TOTALLY different. This is because the boost target is normally increased, and the duty cycle is more aggresive leading to much quicker spool up, and the advance may increased at certain points on the map (and decreased at others) resulting in more power throughout the rev range and a more responsive car.

Those with Knocklinks that were showing medium of high levels or DET will be much quieter, if not totally silent (but I know how you feel about them).

If the point of the remap was to retard the timing a bit just to make it suitable for uk fuel, then you right, you would not notice the difference, but few would do this without doing all the other things possible with a remap.

Presumably they map for a trade-off in economy versus performance.

yes, and they prefer to keep further within the limits of the engine to avoid lots of warranty work.

It goes without saying that it does put more stress on the engine, running more boost etc.

I also think that those who have been to a rolling road before AND after a re-map will be able to tell you that there's a difference, especially in power output. I do agree that you should go to someone reputable for this kind of work though.....

I really can't wait for pete's engine to fail.

For the first time I am wishing something bad to happen, just because I am sick of all the crap he spouts.

I hate to tell you pete, but hundreds of standard engines fail. The analness is people hoping it wont happen to them, usually because they can't afford the repair, but can afford to be **** and it gives them peace of mind.

Gosh what an idiot you are, you ring up a bunch of people once a year and pay them loads of money and what do they give you in return? an insurance document. How do you know that the piece of paper is going to help you when you crash because you are too old to see or react to the road in front of you? You don't, you just trust that they will pay out.

What a mug you are spending hundreds of pounds every time, when you know you won't have an accident. Personally I drive around with no insurance because I know the companies are making mugs out of us all

Adam M :- you are clearly missing the point by a HUGE margin .... I take it you are one of the *****, as your mind isn't working logically??

Car Insurance is COMPULSARY .... doing idiotic, ****, things to your car is NOT - odd as your mind might find that concept.

Re-Maps can be done, may not be done, its a piece of software (something essentially invisible) ...... and they charge £250 for it!!?? Just to change some data within an ECU?? Ever had the feeling you are being bent over and shafted??

Rolling road comparisons, brilliant these are ...... a group of geeks get together, pay £100 each to put their cars onto 4 rollers and then squeal like little piggies when a graph comes out that 'seems' to show that they have gained an extra 1 BHP when they took their boot off the exhaust pipe!!

Its all BOLLOX I tell ya'!!!!!

Remaps - sure software is involved. It's not FREE software, the laptop and connection cables aren't free. The mapper didn't get the experience in two minutes - time and money was involved in training. And what about tax? Surely a 'professional' mapper is paying tax and National Insurance. They have bills to pay like everyone else, so why shouldn't they charge a suitable figure?

If people want to pay over the odds for something - tell them once. If they don't take notice, let them get on with it. After all, it's not coming out of your wallet.

Once the data has been written, it is used on all the cars.

Laptop and cables? £1000 offset against tax.

All I am saying is that a song and dance is made of it all so they can justify extortionate prices!

As far as I am aware the 'standard' basic map is used - just the data is changed? The tough, hard work has been done by the Subaru Engineers - remapping is just tweaking the data to make the car less reliable.

if its so easy to print money, why don't you start doing it?

isn't it about time you let someone else use the oxygen you are wasting?
