Why oh why did i change my oil : (
After changing the engine and tranny oil on MY94 WRX my gearbox now crunches going into 2nd even at low speeds and my engine is a lot noisier than it was and idles all over the place when first starting in the mornings!
I only used 10w40 and i think with it being an oldish motor and having 64K i should have stuck with somthing thicker ie 15/50? I might get some thicker stuff soon and change it again.
How much am i looking at to get the box sorted though???

Errrr well seeing as the car was spot on before i did them both at the same time it's kind of a coincidence don't you think?

Change the oils back to what you had before then
You are wasting time on here if you KNOW whats wrong
Could be your MAF sensor .... and the grub screws work loose on the 5th gear syncro, this affect reverse (but may also affect other gears) - think about these as well

ps. There is an **** Oil Change Procedure to follow - did you follow it?
Change the oils back to what you had before then

Right so i am meant to know what oils were in the car before i bought it then?
I am just assuming that this is the problem ie i'm using to thin an oil etc and maybe somone has experienced this before..THAT is why i posted.

I assumed he had checked his levels as a first stop.
Come on, the chances of both Engine AND Gearbox acting up due to oil changes is pretty remote ..... dont you think?
Its more likely to be the Engine hesitating and affecting the gear change ..... maybe the MAF sensor has gone?
Have you disturbed any wiring?

Oil level is spot on guys..I have changed the panel filter to a green one also and did an ECU reset.No faults found on that.
So if the oil is too thin in the engine this can make the gearbox faulty? I rekon i have upset the balence of the engine big time It's only 10/40 though! Not like it's fully synth!

10W-40 is fine (as long as its reasonable quality and not £4:99 reconstituted stuff??)
Messing about with the induction system points to the MAF Sensor .... check all wires and connections.
The Engine hesitating can give the impression of a 'notchy' gearbox.

pete, most of us find you quite amusing, but the guys got a problem and doesn't really need your **** to be honest.

He has messed with his induction side, thats where the MAF is, the gearbox can seem like its notchy when the engine isn't running right!!

AND an ECU Reset can affect engine running for a few 100 miles!!

Oil uses in the engine was Castrol performance 10/40 and the gearbox was 75/90 it is the best oil for the box but i havn't got a bottle with the with the name on it as it's in work.
Funny you should say that chris as it is hard to read the level when the oil is thinner?! I put in 4.5 litres and max is 4.7 so i'm sure it's ok.
