Default First Time Quarter Mile Experience.......

Had my first go at drag racing - North Weald on Sunday in my lightly breathed on bugeye running approx 300BHP (To be confirmed on rolling road next month).

What a quality day out, been once before but never raced my car, decided to have a go this time and what a rush. I was in a right state as I lined up for the first time, forgot everything I was meant to do, bunnyhopped off the line and recorded a storming 14.9 - TOTB here I come Worst of all, racing next to me was a Siera Cosworth (driven by a rather foxy lady I might add) who handed me my **** on a plate

Second and third attempts were dodgy still and launched like I had Miss Daisy sitting in the back recording two lots of 14.7

Fourth time I finally nailed the lauch and got a rather respectable (I thought) 13.7 whilst winning my first race (against a TVR Chimera). The weather was roasting hot and boost only peaked at about 1.1 bar so hopefully could go slightly better with a bit more boost.

Fifth go wasn't too bad and managed a 13.9.

The less said about the last attempt the better, jumped the lights, far too many revs, sat and burned the clutch out in 1st and 2nd gear - no time recorded - Can still smell the burning clutch 2 days later

I now live my life a quarter mile at a time

good job that man. have seen 13.78 from a standard uk sti at jurby IOM last year so 13.9 for a first attempt is great. anything under 15 second is a quick standars car, but you will want to faster, so just wait to you start spending money on FMIC, bigger turbos, new engine managment system, stronger gearboxes, bigger diffs, bigger injectors, radical cams. hope you have very deep pockets. i know how much i have spent and it scares me sometimes. put up against the likes of the sumo boys or calder boys who maybe spend £100k on engine alone my paltry sum is like pissing in the ocean.

get yourself to the scooby shootout this sunday at elvington, where you will see some seriously fast scoobies.

cheers

big sinky

Already spent masses on turbo, injectors, remap etc to get where it is

Will need to spend a good £4-5K to take it to the next level, i.e FMIC, gearbox, clutch, even bigger turbo, 2.5 bottom end, etc. Can't justify that, car is plenty fast as is so decided to simply enjoy it for the time being.

Would dearly love to go to Elvington next Sunday but no way I'm getting permission from the Mrs to disappear two weekends running

Still quite chuffed with a 13.7 on my first day though

Afternoon matey,

you missed a quality day, shame, but I think there's another in June at North Weald which I might try and get to. LOL at the Ridgeway comment - that was slow in comparison as I decided to go for a proper launch

Might have another friend interested in the rolling road day - very nice and very rare STI 1 - will let you know as soon as I can

Yup, hopefully meet up for a pint before 18th

My 1st time about a year ago I got a 13.9 in my old MY00 classic with a HKS superdragger exhaust system, dump valve and quickshift and on my 2nd go against a standard P1 i got a 13.7 and the P1 got 13.6 on a cold day at Santa Pod, got the car fully decatted added a uprated clutch, panel filter and went to Santa Pod again and could only manage a 13.9 all day, but it was a sunny day and my excuse is I got heat soak.

13.7 definately sounds good for a first go, I've seen WR1's putting in 14 odds.

1/4 miles are definately good fun But I've spent more than I intended to since my first go.

Managed 13.6 on my first run standard (sti7 PPP) since then I've got about an extra 50bhp and all I could manage last time was 13.75!!!

Must have got heat soak too....

You would be suprised how good a scooby or any 4wd car is from a standing start, 5k revs dump clutch and hold on, Went against a 300bhp Fiat coupe 20v turbo and left him standing at the line, he couldnt believe how fast the scooby and how much traction it had off the line.

Sounds like there'll be a few there on Sunday from scoobynet. Will look out for you all!

If a driver with any skill got hold of my car he'd probably manage a 12.5.

I'll be the one trundling in at about 13...

Cheers Alan.

My prob is I got a 13.6 on my first day out and had another go since some major mods and did worse!!!

Not fantastic spec, prob about 350bhp on a bug eye sti, so 12.5 could be optimisitic. Realistically looking for sub 13's seeing how I missed 3rd gear last time out and still got a 13.75!

Still waiting for scooby clinic to do some decent driver upgrades....

What spec scoob are you driving mate?

Having read these threads, makes mine look slightly less incapable!! I used a 0-60mph and 1/4 mile timer on a flat dual carriageway near where i live in good old Gillingham, i've got a T plate (98 engine though) uk turbo 2000, standard other that afterburner de-cat and Ninja backbox and got, 5.8s 0-60 and a measley 14.6 1/4mile!!! Was happy with that till i read these

Fair play to everyone though, especially the sub 13's guys!!

May as well contribute. 1st time @ Santa Pod in MY99uk with est 260-270bhp I got 13.4secs@100mph (was very slippery that day). 2nd visit and a few tweaks later got a 12.4@110mph.

Watch out for some of the Fiat Coupes though. There are a couple with around 300bhp managing very low 13s. The quickest one at the mo is their development car which ran 12.9secs with est 400bhp.

RAs are very quick out of the box with mid 12s with just breathing mods.

The classics will always be more rapid for 1/4 miling unless you start manicly stripping weight out of a newage.....getting in to the 13s is pretty good in a newage car purely because of the extar 150kgs its lugging around....

ive managed 13.74 in my 03 wrx full weight. Ive stripped out 85kg last weekend because its going on track a few times so i will be interested to see what it does on sunday when i give it a pod outing!!

Cars currently running circa 300bhp....

rear seats top 11kg
rear seats bottom 4kg
rear door cards 5kg
rear speakers 1kg
boot carpet and trim 7kgs
spare wheel 12kg
tools and jack 5kg
front passenger seat 22kg
front door cards 5kg
front speakers 5kg

total = 76kg

oops i miscalculated....76kgs .... shocking given that im STILL giving away 74kgs to a classic!!!!

I thought the rear seat of a new age was used to strengthen the chassis, have you got a rear strut brace then.

Its just you mention that you will be taking her on the track too.

yeah i do have a rear strut bar, well, its going on on friday :P the seat itself does strengthen the car but there are 2 bars that are used to hook them in place which could have that effect....then have remained. as they weigh less than 1kg combined!
