new guy wanting his first subaru
hi there, after years of owning my rs turbos i have just sold them and was wanting a subaru. i would like a uk version as ive been told to keep away from an import because of insurance reasons etc...? ive got about £4000 and i think this should be enough for an earlier model....what i would like to know is...are they as slow as some people make out to be...and ive also been told they have chocolate pistons and problems with piston 3 ????? also changing spark plugs are a nightmare...is this a load of bull or is it true there are problems...obviously i wil be buying a high mileage car with the money please help.

Right, this is the way to get a good one:-
1. UK Car only
2. No Modified cars
3. No cars that have been tracked
4. Don't buy off a RoyBacer
5. Try and find a 1 owner - a mature owner!
6. Buy a Wagon, much more likely to have been carefully driven
Just be sensible, don't buy an Imported modified of a 20 something .... coz, you just KNOW its completely and utterly shagged!

For minimum risk I have to agree with the above...Scoobs are the same as any car... If you find a cared for car it will serve you well. An abused one will cost you dear. good luck

The other bonus with a wagon is they don't get modded as often as the 4 door

Just stick to a UK Wagon - Silver is good, Blue Mica is the one to have, as we all know

The plugs are very hard to get to and you need very good one's. Also if you are going to change them yourself be careful not to damage the coil packs. Imports are slightly more to insure but you will usually get an import cheaper than a UK one so the cost is just transferred to the insurance. Catch22!!! Imports are usually higher spec also...

changing the plugs is a doddle prividing you have the correct length socket/extensions only thing you have to move out the way is the water bottle on passenger side and airbox on drivers side.

A scoob engine is strong if it is looked after properly
Warm up and cool down time
regular oil changes with good quality oils
Its the only part i never broke on mine
Thrashed hard about 10mpg
on a normal run in the 20's
