WTF was that awful sound?!?!
Hi all,
Driving home in my MY99 last night -just cruising, gentle, steady pressure on the throttle- I suddenly heard this awful noise comming from the driver's side front wheel, I tried braking, still there! Went around a corner and stopped. Set off again and it had gone as suddenly as it started. Owing to the nature of the sound (it sounding like something fairly abrasive rubbing against the disc) and the duration of its onset, I reasoned that it might just have been a stone from one of the many dodgy road surfaces that had -by a fluke- got caught between the caliper and the disc and got dislodged naturally. Is this feasible?
Has anyone else had this? Pretty scary at the time. Went out and had a look at the wheel this morning and all seems well.

PS. MAF seems fine!!

Yeah it sounds like you had a stone trapped between the disk and the metal shield thing behind the disk. I had that happen on the way home from work once, scared the hell out of me on the dual carriageway.
They usually fall out if you drive forwards and then backwards a couple of times.

I also had this happen to me in my old Nova. It may have been something to do with doing handbrake turns on gravel....
I was told the best method for easy removal is to gently drive the car fowards while going from full left to full right lock. Repeat a couple of times and the stone normally falls out.
If not, its screwdriver time.
