Thinking of p1
Hi there.
After a long break its looking like im coming back to Scooby land.
Im thinking of getting a P1 on a v plate in sonic blue.
I have limited knowledge on these so need to know how tuneable they are etc??
Ultimately with the price of around 20 grand is this the best for the money or would an STI be better???
Help is appreciated
Cheers

I'd have the Type R over the P1. Save yourself around £5000 for what is basically the same car.
£15-18000 is too much to pay for a 5yr old 1st generation impreza IMO.
The P1/22B are classic cars the same with the escort cossie and clio williams. They appeal to the true enthusiast, hence why they are still valued so high!

There's a bloke over on http://www.p1woc.co.uk selling a P1 that's done around £60k miles for around £15k. However it's a 1 (enthusiast) owner car with full documented history from day 1, definately worth a look.
http://www.p1woc.co.uk is the best place to go if you're after info about the P1, very helpful bunch over there.
I've had both, previously I had a P1 but now I have a STI5 Type R. Both very similar, but also a few key differences.
P1 has higher gearing and no DCCD, fine for 99% of conditions you'll come across in the UK. Type R has silly low gearing and a DCCD, so isn't as relaxed for motorway cruising.
P1 front splitter is lower, fine unless you live in Swindon or anywhere with millions of speed bumps.
P1 is a UK car, and most still have warranty which is extendable. You can get them serviced at any Subaru main dealers. Some main dealers won't touch a JDM import.
Both have the same engine but the P1 doesn't have intercooler waterspray, no idea how much difference that makes.
Insurance is about the same, imports are always a bit more expensive than UK cars but the P1 is group 20. I'm 31 with 5 yrs NCB, the P1 cost £771 fully comp and the Type R cost £818 fully comp (though that includes mods).

I seriously recommend having a chat with my friend Chris [user - ChrisS/P1]. He is a top chap and he is currently selling his P1. His car is superb and has been pampered regardless of cost. He lives near junction 4A on the M3 so that isn't too far away from you and he will be able to answer most of your questions about the P1. His car does 'seem' to have high mileage at 65k, but it still drives like new and I would have it off him if I didn't live in London.
If I was in the market for a P1 I would look for the following:
- no major modifications (full decat, etc) unless a professional remap has been carried out
- should have a brake upgrade (brembo, AP, etc) unless you fancy getting intimate with a tree!
- some sort of warranty, no matter how small
- preferably one that has never been on a track
- if the car has over 40k miles I would look for one which has had the MAF replaced and preferably the gearbox (gearbox failures happen more often than you think and they are costly if replaced outside of a warranty).
You can find his thread here:

Please PM me if I can be of any help.
Mark.

STi6 Type R V.Ltd! So few in the country (far less than the P1) and due to new import restrictions they are now unavailable for import. Only 1000 made with only a handfull in the uk (ver.6). A little more exclusive than the P1 i think. One for sale at New Era Imports for around 14 or 15k. Possibly the last one imported...
For an all out drivers car go for the type r but if you prefer something a little more user friendly and a possible warranty, then go for the P1. Check out the type R corner for some background info.
Doug.

I'm thinking of selling. Scoobysport decat blitz nur spec R mid/back end, TSL 6 pots with large discs, crystal indicators, tracker, *zenon*(sp) front lamps.
42k, FSSH,no previous owners, proper subaru warranty for 14 months. .
Mostly motorway miles, and it's not even sniffed a track.
- no major modifications (full decat, etc) unless a professional remap has been carried out
Good to see somebody else has actually owned an sti typeR and a P1. Get a bit fed up of reading on here about people saying which is better having only owned, or dreamt of owning, one of them.

The new MAFs for these have a green stripe on the outside o fthe housing, they're supposed to be a lot stronger.
