Default FAST GETAWAY'S

No not the bank robber type's, can anyone tell me the best way for a fast standing start, i.e.
1. Full rev's, dump clutch,
2. Med rev's, slip clutch slightly, then full rev's, or
3. Get rolling then floor it.
Please bare in mind i don't want to break anything, or fit a new clutch every week.

fined out where your torque peak is, then bring the revs to just below that ie if you torque peaks 4000rpm get the revs up to 3000rpm
then get the clutch to the point where its just biting, then lift your foot off the clutch(dont side step)just lift it up as quick as possible and at the same time nail it

Oh, we can hardly wait; thanks very much...

Is it a Golf diesel or a vectra? Robin reliant? And surely you're the only one who's on this thread bragging about who's the fastest?

LOL @ Where this thread has gone.

Why on all internet forums does some one feel the need to come on and try and make them selves feel big by slagging off everyone else?

Each to their own! LOL

To answer the question the best way to launch an Impreza IMHO is to 'ping' the clutch. In my UK (with decat) I'd hold around 4000rpm and I'd hold the clutch in just below the biting point. When the lights turn green you quite quickly lift the clutch through the biting point whilst flooring it. What should happen is that the clutch starts to bite instantly (but not with the brutality of a full lift/dump) and thus doesn't spin but quickly settles and transfers all the power to the wheels. The energy from holding the 4000rpm is used up in this process and the car is under way but you floored it remember so she's off and running like a scalded cat This is obviously much faster than a slower start (i.e rolling) or no held revs (bogs down) and also IMHO faster than holding silly revs and just sidestepping the clutch. I found doing this caused excessive spinning of the clutch before it would 'bite in' which a) wears it b) is wasteful c) stinks d) means you sit going nowhere for 1/2 a second!

Personally, I would first look in your pocket for a spare £600 for a new clutch before trying any of the above.
No one gets it right first time!
The oe clutch (if fairly new) and is ok for hard launches (according to andy F), but ideally you want an ap organic item, which will take a lot more torque than the oe clutch.
Then theres the gear box. I know I sound like grandad here, but after being present in some of my friends motors, (evo 6 TM, 95 wrx, celica gt4) whilst they tried a fast launch, I vowed never to do it in my scoob. Those poor little gearboxes! (unless I have the spare cash for gearbox, clutch etc.)
I spose being an engineer, I have some mechanical symphathy! Plus I know how long and how much it costs to put right.
If you really want to try a fast clutch, don't side-step the clutch. Use technique no.3 and get the car rolling first before applying full throttle.

Certainly don't do what I did; was showing off to one of the salesguys at work who claimed my car wasn't quick (to get a bite) - rev'ed it up, dumped the clutch and it almost stalled, limping off the line.

WTF? It was then I noticed I had it in second! Doh! Clutch smelled lovely...

Straight after that I made amends, and he cried mercy on the next roundabout...

Thank's for the advice guy's, got to thread no:5 and i honestly thought my pc was playing up, but no it was some *** who obviously could'nt work out where to put his thread, oh well not to worry. I'm off to see if i can destroy my clutch in an hour. The car's under still warranty anyway, so if it blows up it'll only be the clutch i'll have to pay for i guess, by the way do they all stink of burning clutch after you reverse, or is it just mine?
