used esso super unleaded
Today i had no choice but to go to my local tesco express where i saw esso super unleaded which was 97, that is the same shell optimax i think, so i used that in my 94wrx import and was running fine. the nearest shell is about 15 miles away and the guys there are wa****s. Any one else use it or any othere option apart from shell.

Optimax is minimum 98. I also have a 15 mile round trip to nearest Shell. Wouldn't use anything else though. I have used normal super 97 in my other car (16vgti) and then Optimax afterwards and it makes the 97SUL seem like 95, if you follow. Daz

I found Optimax to cause the least amount of activity on the Knocklink closely followed by Esso SUL but found BP Ultimate to cause excessive activity requiring either a boost reduction or a map tweek
As the car is JDM derived it may be wise to add Octane booster as the fuel octane is 100RON in Japan so the reduction in octane (our fuel) may result in detonation.
Cheers

This debate has run ad nauseam now.
Verdict 1 Optimax 98 RON
Verdict 2 BP Ultimate 97 RON
Verdict 3 Esso SUL 97 RON
Due to the franchises I don't know of any garage in my reachable area that offers Optimax. I've recently switched from BP to Esso with no noticeable results, although I don't run a Knocklink, just my ears.
What's the opinion on the best of the last two?
I am aware that this subject has had the hell debated out of it before, so just a quick Ye or Nay would suffice.

Yep....Mine is mapped to run on Optimax 98 ron, but will run perfectly well on Q8 SUL which as you rightly say is 98 ron.
Loads of Q8 selling 98 ron around my way, where as the nearest Shell is 20 miles away. However, Q8 98 ron is 10p a litre more!
I work closely with the petrol retailers and was dubious as to 98 ron SUl at Q8. But it is 98 ron where labeled as such at the pumps.
Shell optimax and Q8 SUL are the only 98 ron brands available in the UK as far as i'm aware. However, Q8 has just been taken over by a big forecourt retailer and the Q8 brand and petrol products are about to disapear over the coming months and be replaced mainly by BP, Total, Texaco and Jet brands.....as such 98 ron sul will go too.

Nearest Shell to me is about 15 miles so I always use Esso SUL on mine with no probs ( UK MY99 Classic ).....Is it actually worth switching to Optimax as the Shell garage is down the road from where I work but is a bit of a bugger to get to.
