Default Comparison Question.

I have a 1995 JDM WRX. My Fiancee has a MY 99 UK Turbo Wagon. We both have replacement centre sections and backboxes and that's about it.

When i drive her car it doesn't accelerate as violently as mine but the gearing seems to be higher.

My car is revving its nuts off in 5th at 120mph but hers is just cruising.
I have got no documentation to suggest that mine is an RA model so i thought they would have similar top speeds and gear ratios etc.

Is there really a diffenence between the two and if so what?

Paul.

Yes there are diffeences

The Import WRX has lower gearing than the UK's (I wont go into why and how!!)

Your 95 has a bigger turbo (TD05) so you get a kick as the turbo comes in. The MY99 has the smaller TD04 turbo. This comes in lower down the rev range and smoother than yours so the kick isn't as big

The RA gearing is a lot shorter!!!!!! You wouldn't want to do a long motorway journey in one

Your early import was designed to go to 112mph (180kph) as it was a JDM and limited as such. So they stuck in lower ratios to give better aceleration to sacrifice top speed.

UK turbo top speed is around 143mph

normally with low ratio boxes they will go to the redline in 5th so just look what speed you are doing at 2000rpm in 5th then multiply up

((speed at 2000rpm) / 2000) x redline rpm

obvioulsy not a good idea to redline in 5th as you will loose your licence, may even lock you up and if you are legally doing it on a track may still blow the engine.
