Question

(It might be time for a new 'questions for Prodrive' section?...)

I'm ear-marking a couple of grand for a PPP, but a little voice in my head keeps saying "the brakes need to be uprated!"

Why don't Prodrive offer a 'keep-your-warranty' brake upgrade for MY99/00. Supposedly the MY99/00 brakes are better than <MY99, but they're no better than my previous 2.0 Vectra SRi's were (any maybe actually worse)!

Prodrive do offer a warranty-friendly brake upgrade!

It's 330mm x 28mm, 4 pot aluminium calipers manufactured for Prodrive by Alcon, and it's 1500 pounds (or thereabouts) from your local friendly Subaru dealer....

Performance is rather good!

They also offer a cheap and cheerful uprated pads and discs combo. Ferodo DS2000's last time I looked, adequate for the majority of drivers fast road use I'd expect. (You can of course get cheaper and just as cheerful upgrades via many other routes - the only warranty I can imagine this voiding is that of the pads/discs themselves - keep your old ones)

Question

Thanks for the replies.

1.5K is a bit more than I was thinking (it's only a little voice), so uprated pads & disks sounds better.

How come Prodrive don't advertise this? I.e. the WRSport brochure which I got at the Subaru dealer doesn't mention either.

On a technical point, the rear disks seems quite small in comparison with other cars (again even to my previous Vectra SRi). Presumably because the front brakes do most of the work should I expect more response from uprating the front brakes than increasing the size of the rear disks?

Question

Is the Prodrive (alcon) brake upgrade better or equal to the AP/Brembo kits???

Chuckster - good point! I'd forgotten about the smaller disk upgardes.

Dippy - as you rightly observe, the front brakes do the vast majority of the work, and so you'll see most benefit from upgrading those.

Regarding the WR brochures, I think these kits are quite new - expect to see them in the next edition of the brochure maybe?

Jake - Are they Prodrive/Alcon kits as good as AP/Brembo? That's a very subjective question! Do a search for lots of opinions on the matter. In the end, it seems to come down to personal preference. One thing I've not seen for any kits is actual data on stopping distances.

The cheap and cheerful option, may be cheerful but not overly cheap. c£500 for front discs and pads, I upgraded with near identical 'kit' for less than £200!

Had the Prodrive brakes fitted from new on my MY00. Comments - Squeak far less than my MY98 orginals did - Just as dusty as they were - Stop you like you wouldn't believe - Can't get them to fade (I could with the 98's but maybe I'm just not trying hard enough with these) - No more expensive than the alternatives.

Summary - I like them.

Its a designer label thing. Ive had Brembo and Alcon. Only real difference is that the Alcon feel a little more progressive. Both stop very well. I'm sure AP is as good as Stef will testify

Stef, you probably never told us whether you are happy with your brakes or not.

How come
