Can anyone recommend a decent route planning software package for PCs - preferably Europe as well. I have seen a few around, but wanted to see what people's experience is.

I agree with Alec, the shellgeostar site is the best site I've come across.

It gets a little OTT when it comes across roundabouts, but it's easy to see where you have to go, particularly when using the "step-by-step maps" option.

For PC software I use Autoroute 2000. I would give it 8/10.

I used the AA for their free details when driving from Calais to Malaga last month, spot on and very detailed and free, I think the RAC do the same

I used MS AutoRoute Express Europe ('98 I think it was) to get to the garage in a tiny town in Holland that I bought my Scoob from, so thoroughly recommended.

(Got lost on the way back as I didn't bother to print the reverse route out and assumed I could just reverse the directions).

I can heartily recommend a package called 'Travelmanager'. It was written by TNT (the parcel people).

It is much, much better than Autoroute. If my memory serves me correctly, it only cost me £39.99 from a company called 'Softwair Publishing'.

Autoroute 2001 is out, and pretty good if you want a non-web based package.

Travel manager is good but.........

Now that infomap have developed a European version (same scale as tr/man)and lowered their prices to something reasonable £100

imho i'd go for infomap plus its instalable and has gps which t/m doesn't.
