Default What measurement system does the UK use?

From everything I've seen, you all use a dang mix of measurements. So what's up, what do you use?

Measurement of what though?

Some stuff is imperial measurement....some stuff is metric....if it is metric, use the imperial measurement anyway

See, this is why I'm confused on what you use.

I've seen mentions(in various places) of MPH, but KM for distance. Bars for pressure, but hp for power.

Ok,

We always use MPH and Miles

Psi on our tyres, Bar on our boost

Other stuff can be both (we are "supposed" to use metric under EU regulations, but nobody bothers )

Gallons(UK) and Litres

Kilograms and Pounds

Feet and Metres

I'm Not sure if that helps

Wow..
No, I haven't landed in the UK. I was just curious.

And why would you obide by EU regs anyways? Didn't Tony Blair tell them to go stuff it when they wanted you to ditch the pound? (smart move I think, too)

Engineering drawings can be in inches or in milimeters and clearances are still given in thou. ie thousandths of an inch.
It gets worse when you go to Southern Ireland. They have just changed to speed limits in KPH, most distances are in kilometers but older ones are still in miles and most of the car speedos are in MPH as are the audometers.

For large amounts we use a bucketful, heaps and shedloads and for smaller amounts a touch, tadge and smidgeon..

The UK is a strange hybrid of units right now. I first went to school in the '70's and was only ever taught in metric units, so why the hell are we still using obsolete units? Most of the engineering world uses metric and I am including the UK in that.

The only imperial unit I would keep is the pint of beer, the rest are anachronisms and should be done away with.

Hears one for you. The toolkit for the kit I work on at the moment is solely metric, as all the nuts and bolts are metric on said piece of kit, apart from the bit of coax with a 9/16 inch spanner head.

When working on Land rovers with a metric tool kit:

3/8" = 10mm
1/2" = 13mm
5/8" = 16mm
3/4" = 19mm and a big hammer

The Foot is a good, useful measurement. It is flexible for everyday use and everyday arithmetic. The metric system is in base ten, with factors of 1, 2 and 5. The foot has factors of 1,2,3,4 and 6, and that means it is easily divisible by thirds, quarters, halfs, sixths and twelfths, unlike metric. I like the foot, me.

What about the Whitworth standard, I seem to remember my Dad mentioning something about an old motorbike of his using this system.
