Unhappy Speedo Needle Going MENTAL !!!!

Got prob with my poor car ! Its feeling under the weather and trying to communicate with me through the speedo. The needle seems to have mind of its own and it flicking round the clock (up and down, reapeatedly). Started happening when I started it yesterday, seemed to be less frequent as car warmed up, but still concerned !?

Any thoughts on what to check rather than let Subaru charge me the earth to give me expensive bad news (no doubt)

Can I do anything by hand before I head off to this meet at Wharf (Nr Bluewater) this evening ?

Ta.

That happened to me on my MY98.

First attempted fix was the garage changed the sender unit (on the gearbox I think) but no joy.

In the end I got a second hand clockset from Grade A for about £100 and that sorted it. Dealer even recommended I tried a second hand unit first, as a new one is over £300.

Not sure how old you car is. If it's an earlier model then it has a mechanical speedo linkage - perhaps that's working loose?

colud be the MAF sensor, unplug it when the cars running and if it still runs then you need a new MAF.

Do a search on MAF sensors and you'll find how to unplug it.

I've heard a lot of things blamed on the MAF sensor, but that's about the most bizarre!

Which age/model of car is it?
