I was having one of those thinking sessions whilst driving to work.

Ive had my MY00 uk turbo for about 6months now and have started wondering how to increase the power and the best way to do it.

So what do you recon?

Depends how far you want to go.

We don't know what you have done so far, or how much you want to spend.

Value for money mods - Exhaust, filter, REMAP!

Out of the frying pan into the fire...

I sold a MY99 UK after changing the filter and putting on a decat, the idea behind that was to get an STi, so it already has more power and save on modding.....

.....got a MY99 STi Type R, so far I've put an Apexi ecu on it (I didnt buy the unit, it was in the boot of the car!!) and had it mapped, just put a full 3" decat on it, just bought an Apexi FC Commander, im in the process of changing the springs on the coilovers and getting it set up properly at TEGsport, I now need another remap cos its over boosting. Long term plans are to get another car to use daily, then put a bigger turbo on, maybe a front mount or poss MRT topmount, then probably larger injectors.... I think you get the picture... the more power you get, the more you want....

Help....

Ollie

We're talking a UK car here so your best bet is always a full decat exhaust, good panel filter and TEK2 Upgrade. The car will feel drastically different. (supect im teaching you to suck eggs here) To get more, mimicking the STi5 paets is a good start (440's VF turbo etc), but IMO the best bet if you want bigger power is to buy an STi5. Ive had both and there's no comparison, plus the STi has potential for over 300 bhp with the same decat and TEK3 type mods.

Depends what you're after...

Jay, what power are you looking to run through the MRT TMIC?

Ive gone for an HKS FMIC, but still not sure if its overkill - gives me room for bigger mods though.

With the set up & boost im running at the mo, I've been told I could be looking around 340-350bhp at the mo (got a rr day in March so I'll know then). Utlimately, Id like to get it towards the 400 region.

I know someone who has an MRT topmount that is running with about
385+ bhp.... Im not keen on putting a front mount on purely and simply because I dont want to have to hack into my bumper (got a 22b style one) plus they are a little bit cheaper

Im sure when I get to that stage, there'll be plenty of people telling me I should get a front mount, but we'll see

Just interested as I had the same dilemma and the MRT seemed like the best option after a FMIC. Does the chap you know monitor charge temp?

Realistically im targeting about 360 bhp so the MRT may be fine...

AFAIK he does, and I believe the MRT would be suitable for that kind of power.

No, STi5 is MY99 although 1st models were released late 98.

Type R tends to be quite a bit more pricey than the 4 door. Depends what your reason for wanting one over a 4 door is....

it all depends on how much you want to spend and where you want to be once all the modifications start going on a properly mapped car it make no difference wether its an sti or a wrx mine is a uk car with a couple of mods but i wouldnt be bothered if an STI tried on when i was sat at the lights

agree with stevebt. When you buy a car, whether it's newer or an STi, there are normally loads of little (and some big) expenses that you have probably spent the last few years sorting on your current car. Best stay with the current car if it runs well and has no problems. Safest bet.

Or maybe he's just had it for 6 months and hasn't done any mods

Agreed, it depends on what power levels you're after. An STi can make 320 ish bhp with exhaust and ECU mods, at least a V5 (VF28) can.

To get a Uk car to that would mean new pump, upgrade injectors to 440's, bigger turbo, uprated clutch, bigger TMIC, and then the gearbox isn't as strong, nor does it have forged pistons or higher duration cams. The chassis isn't as well sorted as the STi either, and there are aesthetic issues such as the nice interior etc

Granted if you want to go past 320 ish BHP, the STi needs bigger injectors, pump, turbo etc, as the UK car would.

Not nocking a UK car in any way, ive owned 2. Its just that comparing them in terms of power alone isn't the full story and you may save a lot of hassle going for one if your power targets aren't extreme.

Guess in the case of a late classic STi, they do cost a couple of £k more than a UK car and insurance is a bit more. Maybe a UK car with more mods would cost mre to insure?

EVO is a much better base for big power

Steve, I think yours has a "few" mods rather than a couple Least I hope so or mine's classed as billy no mods

Ive done very little, scoobysport backbox and green panel filter. Ive got a load of guages to go on soon though.

I like the idea of keeping the car, cos i know that it runs fine (although a little tappety).

Mmmmhh EVO, just throw a spanner in the works.....
