Default My first little race in the scoob.

Hi,

I had a little play with a modified Golf GTI the other day....I'm not sure what had been done to it, but it was definately quicker and lower than a standard GTI...

It was the first time I've driven my car 'properly' and I could do with some advice on the handling......

Basically going around a round about the GTI lost me.....I caught up on the straights again (even that was a struggle!!) though. My car seems to suffer from quite bad understeer and I found it hard to keep it straight on the roundabouts....and coming back out of the roundabout, I put the power back on and the front of the car seemed to be all over the place...hence the gti got away again...

I'm not sure if it's partly the power steering going light too?? what would cause that?

Also, what PSI should be in the tyres?

I'm getting a de-cat soon, so that should help with the power issue and torque I hope

Cheers,

Paul.

They're great these urban race-tracks aren't they? Especially the ones near schools.

new gti std is 180 bhp (pre 54 plate) pay jabba sport £440 and get 223 bhp, so if you car is standard, from 60 it would probably be as quick (the golf) as the power is distributed to two wheels and not lost through the 4x4 transfer box as is the issue with 4x4

Its a Scooby....4x4...nothing can loose you on a roundabout..just remember never to take your foot off the accelerator whilst turning at a high speed and you will stay on track

4x4's are best around twists and turns...

Paul,

The UK turbo as standard does suffer from understeer so that it is 'safe' for the average driver.

Firstly I would advise to get the bumpsteer mod carried out and a fast road geometry setup on the car, this can be done by Powerstation or the like.

Next would be some Eibach springs, or AST coilvers if the money is available.

Then a Whiteline 22mm adjustable rear anti roll bar with solid drop links.

Always of course purchase the highest quality of tyres that you can afford as they are the only point of contact you have with the road, crap tyres = crap grip = golf gets away!!

As for PSI in the tyres, it depends what size you are on. When running my 18's I use 34/35psi all round but on the 17's I use 33 on the front and 31/32 on the rear.

Nezz.

I'm sure that most of us use the right foot pedal from time to time to bring about a little smile and as far as i'm concerned that's fine as long as its done sensibly and safely.

Paul, take it easy mate. Keep yourself to yourself try not to be taken in with other folk out there thats when accidents happen.

Remember a car is only as good as the driver driving it.

Enjoy your car mate, but keep it safe

Let me guess...your over 40 with kids??

This was on a near empty dual carriage way mate, no one to hurt but myself!!

I NEVER speed or do any silly things in built up areas.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice!

What is the bumpsteer mod?? The car has uprated springs already, cant remember the make...will find out.

Where is a good place to get the anit-roll bar?

the tyres are standard 16" ones.

Cheers,

Paul.

Scoobs are good when in boost and not lightening fast against all!
Golfs are beatable but not by massive amounts.

Hi,

Dont get me wrong, I could keep up with the fella....I just thought that my car seemed to have excessive amounts of understeer.

Cheers,

Paul.
