Disabling Scooby!
#1
Am going away soon, scoob will be locked away in garage, with steering lock, and Tracker keeping an 'extra' eye out. But it there anything else I can do easily? Not interested in fitting barrier deadlock etc, but can the car be disabled by removal of a fuse, fuel cut off?? Even considered jacking up and removing wheels.
Paranoid? me? no - just live in Manchester!!

How about hiring a skip and blocking the garage. Might be cheaper than a hire car...
Plus by the first evening all your neighbours will have filled it with crap so it won't be easily moved.
Make sure the car has no petrol in it, jack the car up on to axle stands and let all the air out of the tyres (ensuring you have a foot pump
I reckon simply removing the wheels will make scum break in to find them.
That should just about do it.

Bolt the garage door shut using ring eye bolts set into the concrete floor and holes drilled into the door. This assumes that you have a side door Also try a Bulldog Euroclamp as well a wheel lock to make it difficult to push onto a trailer and alarm you garage. You can get one of those wire free alarms for less cost than hiring a skip

I like the skip idea ...
Think of all those matresse's that would appear out of thin air while you are away
But on a serious note an 8yrd skip with a load of topsoil or the like would make a perfect barrier when away on ya holls ... I'm sure if you had a chat with ya local skip hire company they would be able to offer you something ...
Removing the steering wheel and leaving round a mates house will also fox 'em if you don't bother with a skip, I used to leave my old car on my parents drive and remove the wheel and get them to take me home with wheel in hand ..... it was always there when I got back ...

1)Take the plug leads of or even remove the plugs (if you can get to them).
2)Reverse the car tight up against the back of the garage and turn the number plate round and write "please stop me I'M NICKED"
3)Take the seats out and leave them at a mates house.
4)Leave the car in reverse and remove the gear lever.
Good luck and enjoy your trip.
Cheers

I love the idea of getting a number plate done saying 'NICKED'. Can't be too difficult to convince the local Halfords spod to make one up. Doesn't stop it getting nicked in the first place though.
Gearlever removal... Nice.

Scooby in Manchester?
Away for a while?
Well, now that you've told the whole world, here's my recommendation:
Go down to B&Q and buy approximately 75 breeze blocks, 10kg of cement.
Go home, remove the garage door and use the blocks to brick-up the void.
Upon your return, hire a pick-axe and angle grinder, and pray the rubble doesn't fall on the car.

1. Lift passenger footwell carpet.
2. Unscrew metal plate
3. Disconnect ECU plugs
4. Unscrew and remove ECU in it's box
5. Refit metal plate
6. Replace passenger footwell carpet
7. Put ECU in a very safe place

Moray, I like it, great idea. Keys already 'booked' into bank deposit box, funny looks aside can't see why they wouldn't take an ECU as well!!
Thanks guys. Skip is good idea, unfortunatly garage doesn't have side door so bolting shut not an option!
If I get the exhaust done before we go, it should be loud enough to wake the neighbours if anyone manages to start it and garage door squeeks so much that does just as good a job

I always save up any jobs that need doing on the car for when I am away on holiday and leave the car with the dealer, that way its under lock and key and is his responsiblity, and you come back to a nicely serviced and washed Scoob when you get back

Nick,
There are several derivatives of ECU for the subaru... it would take a very clued up thief to take the right one, or right selection to the car... if this sort of criminal want's your car, they will find a way regardless. They will not want to damage the car in the process of "jacking" it. :shrugged shoulder smiley:

Chaps & Chapesses... Could I suggest that you change your sign-on name and maybe remove the area from your profile? It doesn't take much intelligence (well, any) to find out your address given your name and area.
Someone had a crack at breaking into my house a few months ago and the police reckon that it was for car keys. Consequently I'm healthily paranoid. Hence the hotmail address.
My garage is locked with Autolok Stoppas, which are great locks: bit goes on the door and another bit goes onto your floor. Search the archives and you'll find a phonenumber for autolock who are selling a matched pair for 35 quid. Only way to open the door will be to cut the locks out, which will be noisy.
Removing the ECU has already been recommended. I didn't bother. For anyone that has done it, are there any issues to be aware of (such as static etc)?

Try removing the battery, & HT Leads, Drain the fuel out, I do this and I also have a Wheel Clamp which I put on.
I like the number plate idea, I remember somewhere about an alarm when triggered release the real number plate to show a plate saying stolen. Love the Skip idea.

As an alternative to a skip...
Buy a really cheap banger for £50 or less and stick that in front of the garage.
I would think a rusty, battered Y reg Yugo with flat tyres will deter most people from looking inside. .
