SHOCKING!
Every time i touch the body of my 51 plate I get an electric shock.
Tonight I touched the door handle whilst the engine was running and,
1- heard a loud crack
2- felt a lot of pain in my finger
3- swore loudly like the hairy arsed builder that I am.
Is there a problem with my car and is there any suggestions what I can do about it.

I used to find this with touching a metal door at work in the office. I always touched the paintwork (discharging yourself slowly) before grabbing the metal door handle to pull the door open. Since the scoob is painted you would think that this would not be a problem, obviously so!

Seriously, what shoes you are wearing can affect it

Try carrying a lightweight chain with you, before you touch your car let it touch the ground for a while, this might discharge the static build up on you, perhaps it's not the car?

As mentioned earlier.... You are building the static up on yourself, through the clothes you wear, or the carpets you walk on, or you wear footwear that is very electrically insulating. When you touch an earthed item, like the car (you might think they're insulated because they're standing on rubber, but tyres have carbon in them which is a good electrical conductor) the static discharges to earth and you get a belt.
Wear natural fibres.
Often you can get a build up of static from pushing a push-chair that has plastic wheel-bearings. These ******* are like miniature Van de Graaf generators. I've been fried on many an occasion when I've touched a metal handrail after pushing one of those for a while.....

You may have seen cars with a plastic thing hanging from the towing eye at the back I think halfords sell them, these discharge any static built up in the car body by earthing the car, bits of rag dont work BTW

LOL
I doubt that the plastic things hanging down work either, given that plastic can be a good insulator.
Its not the car thats charged, its the person.
I used to get it - try earthing yourself by touching metal objects through the day.
Remember also that cars earth to the bodyshell, so of course touching that is going to give you a shock.

Not as bad these days as when you had to use a key to open the doors.....

The static charge on the car is caused by the air flowing over it when driving, when getting out just hold the metal door frame/pillar then put your foot on the ground.
The charge will then be dissipated without shocking you
