had a little blast with a nissen pulser i was in my95 import wrx 285bhp and he was given me a good go not quite as quick as me but a bit bloody close i was impressed anyone else had a blast with one

 

The only thing that lets them down is a fragile engine other than that there a match for most

 

yeh i had a battle with one 2 months ago which was chipped.. it wasnt as quick off the mark or round corners but who knows how good the driver was!

 

ive got a 350bhp pulsar which gives most scoobies a good workout.but like you say ,the drivers could have been cack.as for fragile engines i dont know about that,dont you mean the gearbox?.youve also got to bear in mind the age of the pulsar,they havent got the technology that a lot of the newer scoobs have.

well the main prob with the pulsar is the build quality scoob aint that good but the pulsar is in a nother league ive had both and would take the scoob anyday ...chris

as for a match in power, deffo true evan had my wrx's **** kicked off a couple gtir's and not ashamed to admit it

 

yes im impressed with my power over took him and he was with me just dropping back a little but im well impressed with them just not the looks

 

My mates got one, first his turbo went, upgraded to big hybrid + FMIC.
Its very fast, beats my scoob easily - He's not been beaten by hardly anything yet. Only problem is its off the road now with gearbox trouble
All bearings need replacing and teeth missing from second gear

 

The engines; pistons especially, struggle to cope with any increase in output and the gearboxes just seem to struggle to keep together no matter what! That said Im still going to import a Bluebird SSS Atessa which is similar mechanically, but no one knows wtf it is.

Gtir engines don't just blow like import scooby engines can do when backing off after ONE top speed run. If a Gtir engine goes, the chances are someone has just turned up the boost and done nothing else, or there is some other problem at the root of it. (50bhp of NO2 for example, or the actuator boost hose has been disconnected by the previous owner to make it appear faster for the new owners test drive) There are standard engines running over 350bhp and the americans claim they are good for around 500bhp if properly set up. (no one's proved it yet tho)
Gearboxes do go, but 6000rpm and side stepping the clutch ain't the way I'd launch mine and is it any wonder that kills the gearbox.
As for build quality, can't realy argue on that as they are 10-14 years old now whereas they still make the Subaru. Same for handling, they understeer quite badly if driven hard, but it can be tamed quite well with a few choice bits.
Bang for buck tho, I don't think you can beat the Gtir, 0-60 in 5.5, high 13s 1/4s as standard from 220bhp Just make sure you get a good one like I did.

 

i agree with carl.its the same with all turboed engines,if you dont take the proper precautions when upgrading then they will go bang.comparing the money ive spent on my car and the money my mate spent buying a new wrx sti,my car spanks his all day long(personally i think i got more speed/fun for my money).i think thats just the tight jock in me!its good to see there are some proper scooby drivers out there though that appreiciate some cars for what they are.

I was under the impression that GTiRs has SR20DET engines same as 200sx's? If so they really arent that weak Great cars on the strip.....

 

mate rang me up a while ago asking re pulsars as he has a tvr chimaera 5.0l and said he could not shake the pulsar off!!

Pulsars do have an SR20DET engine but its not quite the same as a 200SX. The weak spot is the gearbox/transmission. Saying that a mate had a 370BHP Pulsar which was on its OE gearbox. 5th engine rebuild but OE 'box!

I loved mine to bits and only changed due to not being practicle with a family. I'd love another one.

I took off the actuator boost hose a few times. Was careful but asking for trouble

 

GTi-R RNN14 SR20DET is stronger, 2mm wider at the big end, 1mm wider headbolts and extra reinforcement on the block, also over the years of production the gearbox casing was strengthend.
