NO, don't just top it up with those oils!!!!!! Fine if you are changing the oil. But if just topping up find out what oil the garage you use puts in and use that.
If you have just got it and have no idea what oil was used before best to put fresh in. FOr the cost of £40 it's worth it.
I'd go with either Motul 300V 15W/50, Castrol RS 10W/60 or Mobil Motorsport 15W/50. From AS Performance, Castrol Classics etc.
Tony.

The point is tho that he asked what oil to TOP UP the engine with. The search button can't tell him what to use, only the garage that services it can tell him that.
I'll say again do not mix two oils when you don't know what one is. Either find out or change the oil totally.
Tony.

You might as well add - 'If you don't know how to search, you shouldn't own a computer.'
I've worked with a large number of graduates, who don't have any common sense and probably don't know a car actually has to have oil in it, let alone what type to put in. However, if I wanted to know about art, American history, the English language or micro-biology in answer to a WWTBAM question, they would all be on my 'phone-a-friend' list.

Why don't SN have a FAQ section covering these like most other enthusiast sites - this would make it easier for people to access this kind of info and prevent multiple threads on the same topic!

Because no one will write one, and if they did, others would tear it to shreads and it would end up in a technical slagging match
Sad but true.

Back on topic, this is what you're looking for.
As far as I'm concerned, the definitive answers are here (although others may disagree)
Well, I've got recommendations from three seperate companies who are all experts in oil.
1. Silkolene Technical Department
2. Motul Technical Department
3. OATS - The largest proprietory oil recommendation database in the UK.
And, these were the recommendations that I recieved from them:
Impreza 2.0i Sport 1996-00
Motul 5w-40 or 10w-40
Silkolene 5w-40 or 10w-40
OATS 10w-40
Impreza 2.5i 4WD 2001 onwards
Motul 5w-30 or 5w-40
Silkolene 5w-40
OATS 5w-30 or 5w-40
Impreza 2.0i WRX/STi Turbo 2001 onwards
Motul 5w-30 or 5w-40
Silkolene 5w-40
OATS 5w-30 or 5w-40
Impreza 2.0i Turbo 1994-00
Motul 5w-40 or 10w-40
Silkolene 5w-40
OATS 10w-40
Impreza 2.0 4WD 2000 onwards
Motul 0w-30, 0w-40, 5w-30 or 5w-40
Silkolene 5w-30 or 5w-40
OATS 5w-30 or 5w-40
Impreza 1.6i, 1.8i 4WD 1993-96
Motul 5w-40 or 10w-40
Silkolene 10w-40
OATS 10w-40
I also spoke to Subaru UK's technical helpline this week and they recommend a MINIMUM quality of 10w-40 semi-synthetic but also recommend 5w-40 fully synthetic and 10w-40 fully synthetic as higher quality options.
Cheers
Simon
