If the oil is too thin you will get a knocking noise, but what sort of mileage does this car have on the clock? normally (but not always) piston slap shows its head early (less than 30k) rather than later.

Winter weather = noisy engines when cold.
If the noise only changes in speed, but doesn't get louder from more throttle, it's most likely the valve lifters. (Nothing to worry about). If it gets louder from more throttle, it could be piston slap or worst case scenario, mild rod knock.
